Thishostspecificityappearstohaveledtotheevolutionofraceswhicharemorphologicallysimilar,butphysiologicallydistinct.
Laterresearchusingmolecularapproachesconfirmedthepresenceofhost-drivendivergenceinothermistletoespecies;forinstance,NickrentandStell(1990)usedisozymedatatoidentifytwodistincthostracesofhemlockdwarfmistletoe(Arceuthobiumtsugense),inwhichgeneticdiversityhasbeeninfluencedbybothgeographiclocationandhostrange.
Similarly,amolecularanalysisusingAFLPsofthedwarfmistletoeA.

GlaciationsandfoundereffectsmayhavestructuredthegeneticdiversityofArceuthobiumtaxa,andthehostracesidentifiedbythisresearchmaybeinastateofincipientspeciation.

Takentogether,thesefindingssuggestthathostraceformationmayhavebeenanimportantpromoteroftaxonomiccomplexityandspeciationinmistletoes,andpotentiallyamongotherhemiparasites.
Host-drivenspeciationinholoparasitesInvestigationsintothetaxonomicandphylogeneticrelationshipsamongtheholoparasiteshavebeenhinderedbytheirextremereductionsinmorphologyandgenomesize(dePamphilisandPalmer1990).
