The Eiffel Tower (French: La Tour Eiffel, [tu? ?f?l] , nickname Ladame de fer, the iron lady) is a puddle iron lattice tower located on

Namedfor its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, the tower was built as theentrance arch to the 1889 World's Fair.

The tower stands 324 metres (1,063 ft) tall, about the same heightas an 81-storey building. Upon its completion, it surpassed the

Washington

Monument to assume the title of tallest man-made structure in theworld, a title it held for 41 years, until the Chrysler Building in NewYork City was built in 1930; however, due to the addition in 19(转载

The tower has three levels for visitors. Tickets can be purchased toascend, by stairs or lift, to the first and second levels. The walk tothe first level is over 300 steps, as is the walk from the first to thesecond level. The third and highest level is accessible only by elevator. Both the first and second levels feature restaurants.

凯旋门

The Arc de Triomphe (Arc de Triomphe de l'étoile) is one of the most famous monuments in Paris. It stands inthe centre of the Place Charles de Gaulle (originally named Place del'étoile) , at thewestern end of the

Champs-élysées. [1] There is a smaller arch, the Arc de Triomphe du

Carrousel, which stands west of the Louvre. The Arcde Triomphe (in English: "Triumphal Arch" ) honours thosewho fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and theNapoleonic Wars, with the names of all French victories and generalsinscribed on its inner and outer surfaces. Beneath its vault lies theTomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I.

The Arc de Triomphe is the linchpin of the historic axis (Axehistorique)—a sequence of monuments andgrand thoroughfares on a route which goes from the courtyard of theLouvre, to the Grande Arche de la Défense. The monument was designed byJean Chalgrin in 1806, and its iconographic program pitted heroicallynude French youths against bearded Germanic warriors in chain mail. Itset the tone for public monuments, with triumphant patriotic messages.

The monument stands 50 metres (164 ft) in height, 45 m (148 ft) wideand 22 m (72 ft) deep. The large vault is 29. 19 m (95.8 ft) high and

14.62 m (48.0 ft) wide. The small vault is 18.68 m (61.3 ft) high and

8.44 m (27. 7 ft) wide. It is the second largest triumphal arch inexistence (after Arch of Triumph in

Pyongyang) . Its design was inspired by the Roman Archof Titus. The Arc de Triomphe is so colossal that three weeks afterthe Paris victory parade in 1919, marking the end of hostilities inWorld War I, Charles Godefroy flew his Nieuport biplane through it, withthe event captured on newsreel.

美食French Food

French cuisine is extremely diverse, with only the Chinese havingsimilar variety in their food. This variety is supported by the Frenchpassion for good food in all its forms, France's extraordinary rangeof different geographies and climates which support the local productionof all types of ingredients, and France's long and varied history.

In many ways, an understanding of the culture of French food is anunderstanding of France itself.

Meals range from the very basic, such as the traditional baguetteplus cheese plus inexpensive wine, to very elaborate affairs than caninvolve a dozen courses and different wines consumed over several hours.Obviously, the latter type of dining is exceptional for most people. However, it is this more sophisticated dining which is typically foundin "Frenchrestaurants" outside France, giving many foreigners themistaken impression that French food is heavy and complicated. In fact, much of the French cuisine is fairly simple, relying on high qualityfresh ingredients and loving preparation rather than complex recipes.

It is common in much of France to take a two hour break for lunch, with many working parents

(particularly in villages and smaller towns) returning home forlunch. In some areas, mainly in the south of France, even longer lunchbreaks are taken. Due to the long lunch break, businesses which closefor this period typically reopen around 2PM or so and then stay openuntil about 7PM.
