Inresponse,amulti-stakeholdereffortwasledbyCMStoprovidestandardizationamongthepublicandprivatesectors.
InMarch2005,CMSissuedafinalrulethatobligatedhealthcareproviderstouseauniqueprovideridentifier,knownastheNationalProviderIdentifier(NPI).
WhatisanNPIANationalProviderIdentifierorNPIisaHealthInsurancePortabilityandAccountabilityAct(HIPAA)AdministrativeSimplificationStandard.
Itisaunique,intelligence-freenumericidentifierusedtoidentifyhealthcareprovidersinstandardtransactions,suchclaims,eligibilityinquiriesandresponses,claimstatusinquiriesandresponses,referrals,andremittanceadvices.
WhomustapplyforanNPIAllHIPPA-coveredentities:healthplans,healthcareclearinghouses,andhealthcareproviderswhoelectronicallytransmitanyhealthinformationinconnectionwithtransactionsforwhichHHShasadoptedstandards.

Thecodesetisstructuredintothreedistinct"levels"includingProviderGrouping,Classification,andAreaofSpecialization.
