ProcessorperformanceAlthoughrawprocessorspeedhasamajorimpactonsystemperformance,otherfactorsalsocontributetooverallperformance;forexample,thetypeofdiskdrive(SCSI,ATA,orSerialATA),diskspeed,memoryspeed,graphicsadapter,andbusspeeds.
Thegeneralruleisthat"thefastertheprocessor,thebettertheperformanceis,"butthisonlyapplieswhencomparinglikearchitectures.
Forexample,itisdifficulttoarriveatperformanceexpectationsforanIntelprocessorwhencomparedtoanAMDprocessorjustbylookingattheirrespectiveprocessorspeeds.
Thereisalsoageneraltrendtodaytode-emphasizeprocessorspeedsandmovetomulti-coreprocessors,whichactuallycanhavelowerprocessorspeeds.
NXtakesadvantageofmodernprocessors,andifaprocessordoesnothavetherequiredfunctionality,youwillseethefollowingerrormessageandNXwillnotrunontheinstalledCPU:ThisprocessoristoooldandnotsupportedanymoreSMPSymmetricMultiprocessing(SMP)issupportedinNXmostlyviaParasolid,althoughasmallnumberofNXcapabilitieshavesomethreading.
Ingeneral,itisnotpossibletoquoteafigureforthegeneralperformanceimprovementachievedbyusingSMP,sincethisimprovementdependsonthenatureoftheoperationsyouareperforming.

Multi-coretechnologyiscomplexand,dependingontheconfiguration,canactuallyhaveanegativeimpactonperformance.
Thisisduetothepotentialconflictofmultiplecoressharingsystemresources,suchascache,memory,andbusbandwidth,aswelltheneedforthesystemtomanageandcontrolanincreasingnumberofcores.
Increasingthenumberofcoresdoesnotalwaystranslateintobetterperformance.
AlthoughadditionalcorescanimproveNXperformance,processorspeedisstillavitalmeasurementofNXperformance.
Manysystemsenableyoutoturnoffcoresviathebios,whichcanenableyoutocompareperformancewithadifferentnumberofcoresthatareactive.
Someusersmayfindthatturningoffsomecoreswillactuallyimproveperformance.
Onemicro-architecture(Intel)evendoesthisautomatically,shuttingdownunusedcoresandincreasingtheclockspeedoftheothers.
Thehardwarevendorscontinuetoimprovetheirprocessormicro-architecturestobetteraddressthelimitationsofoldermulti-coretechnologies.
