Industriesarere-quiredtousethemethodsbothinevaluatingtheirwastewaterandinapplyingforNationalPollutionDischargeEliminationSystem(NPDES)permits(3).
DeviationsfromthesemethodsrequireEPAapprovalinadvance.
Generalinformationabouttheproceduresfollows,precedingillustrationsandbriefoutlinesoftheanalyses.
GC-MSAnalysesforOrganicPollutantsFortherevisedGC-MSanalyses,theorganicpollutantsareclassi-fiedasvolatilesorasnonvolatileacids(phenols),base-neutrals,andpesticidesandPCBs,astheywereinthe1977protocol(1).
Thechromatographiccolumnsdescribedintheoriginalprotocol,however,havebeenreplacedwithcolumnsdevelopedthroughadvancedcolumntechnology.
Thenewerpackingsaremorethoroughlydeactivatedthanthepackingstheyreplace,anduseofthecolumnslistedintherevisedmethodsimprovesthedetectionofprioritypollutants.
TheGC-MSanalysesfortheorganiccom-poundsareincorporatedintotwomethods,Method624forvolatilesandMethod625fornonvolatiles.
GCorLCOrganicPollutantAnalysesTheGCorHPLCmethods(Methods601-613)simplifychromato-graphicanalysesbyseparating113organicpollutantsinto13classesanddescribingananalysisforeachclass.
EachGCorHPLCUSEPAProceduresforWastewaterAnalysesbyPackedColumnGCandHPLCanalysisspecifiestheuseofachromatographiccolumnthatwillresolveallofthepollutantsinoneclassandadetectionsystemthatisspecificfortheiridentification(2).
Certainmethodsalsosuggestusingaconfirmationalcolumntosubstantiatetheidentityofthepollutants.
SupelcoGCpackingswereusedbytheEPAtoevaluatethesemethodsforprioritypollutantanalyses.
SupelcopackingsarelistedbytheEPAinmanyofthemethods,andformostoftheothermethodsSupelcopackingsaregenericallyequivalentalternativestothelistedpackings.
Supelcopackingsandcolumnswereusedtoobtainallofthechromatogramsinthisbulletin.
ConcentrationofOrganicPollutantsOrganicpollutantsnormallyarepresentatppborlowerlevelsinwastewatersamples,andtheymustbeconcentratedpriortochromatographicanalysis.
Thevolatileorganicsarepurgedfromthewatersampleandaretrappedonsolidadsorbents(GC-MSMethod624orGCMethod601,602,or603).
Therecommendedpurge-trapmethodhasbeendescribedbyBellarandLichtenberg(4).
Aftertheorganicsareadsorbed,theyarerapidlyheatdesorbedfromthetrapontothechromatographiccolumn.
TheEPArecom-mendsadifferentadsorbenttrapforeachofthefourmethodsofanalysisforvolatilepollutants.
Eachtrapprovidesthebesttrappingefficiencyforthevolatilecompoundslistedinthecorrespondingmethod.
Thenonvolatileorganicsareconcentratedbysolventextractionofthewatersamplefollowedbyconcentrationoftheextractto1mLinaKuderna-Danishconcentrator.
Subsequently,theextractisdriedonasodiumsulfatecolumn.
Whenwatersamplesareextremelydirty,specificcleanupproceduresareusedwitheachextractionmethod.

Wehaveusedtwo-meterglasscolumnsforthosemethodsthatcallforanominalsix-footglasscolumn.
