118).
ThefirstofAirAmerica'sownCaribous(B-851)servedinLaosformanyyears.
Atleastsince1965,however,itwasactuallybasedatUdornasaspecialmissionaircraftforrescueandexfiltrationwork,towhichaFultonSkyhooksystemcouldbeattached.
IntheearlyyearsthisaircraftwasalsousedtotransportsmallAirAmericaaircraftlikeHelioCourierswhichhadhadanaccident:Insuchacase,thewingsoftheHeliowereseparatedandthenputintotheCariboutogetherwiththefuselage.
OnlyintheearlyseventiesB-851wastransferredtoSaigonwhereitobtainedtheregistrationN11014andwasfinallyusedinSouthVietnamtosupplyAirAmerica'sownfleetofaircraftwithfuel.
AirAmerica'ssecondCaribou(B-853)wasquicklyconsideredtobeinadequateforserviceinLaos,althoughreversepropshadbeeninstalledinbothaircraftby1963.
AftersomeyearsofworkwiththeRoyalThaiBorderPoliceoutofBangkok,itwasleasedtotheUSAFinAugust68untilitwassoldin1973.
TheothertwoCaribousownedbyAirAmerica,N539YandN544Y,werebasedatSaigonnearlyallthetimeandusedunderavarietyofmilitaryandUSAIDcontracts,deliveringallsortsofsuppliesasallAirAmericaaircraftdidinSouthVietnam.
BecauseoftheirSTOLcapabilities,however,thoseCaribouswereoftenusedonflightstotheMontagnardpopulationlivinginthehillcountry.
AlthoughUSAIDwasofficiallythemaincontractortoAirAmericainSouthVietnam,allCIAmissionsinSouthVietnamwereflownaspartoftheUSAIDcontracts,andwithinthosecontracts,allCIArequirementswerehandledwithpriority(Harnage,Athousandfaces,pp.
81/2).
ThemajorityofCaribousoperatedbyAirAmerica,however,werebailedaircraft,whichusedthelastthreedigitsoftheirmilitaryserialasAirAmericaserial.
Since1964AirAmericaoperatedatleastfouroftheminLaoswhichwerebailedfromtheUSArmy.
SometimesbailedCaribouswereusedas"VictorControl",thatisasanorbitingcommandpostduringrescueoperations.
ThereasonforusingonlybailedCaribousonthoserescuemissionswasthattheyhadVHF/UHFcapabilitysothattheycouldtalktomilitaryaircraft,whileB-851andB-853hadonlyVHF(e-maildated24April2005kindlysenttotheauthorbyformerCariboupilotJoeHazen).
ButofcourseAirAmerica'sCaribouweremainlyusedasSTOLcargoaircraft,whoserolewithintheCompanyiswelldescribedbya1968articlepublishedinAirAmericaLog:"OftheninedeHavillandDHC-4A,orC-7A,Caribouaircraftinourfleet,themajority(five)areassignedtoourbaseatVientiane,Laos.
TheCaribouoffersawiderangeofpayloadperformancealternatives,dependinguponthelengthoflandingstripavailable.
At26,000lb.
grossweight,theaircraftiscapableoftakingoff,forexample,fromanunprepareddirtstripinadistanceof540feetground-rollandclearinga50-footobstaclein1,020ft.
Withfuelandoilfor400nauticalmiles,plusreserves,theaircraftiscapableofgettingairbornewithapayloadof5,420lb.
Wheretherunwaylengthisnotquitesocritical–althoughstilldemandingofSTOLperformance–theCaribou,at28,500lb.
,willtakeoffinadistanceof725ft.

ThedeHavillandCaribouwillaccommodate32peoplewhenconfiguredasapassengerplane.

LaterAirAmericatitlesandaradarnosewereadded.
ThoseUSAFCaribousonloantoAirAmericaneverleftLaos,however,sothatthelastofthemreturnedtotheUSAFinJune74.
AstotheCaribousremaininginSouthVietnamattheend,N539YevenflewforICCSAirServicesin1973,andN11014didnotmakeithome.
