Establishedin1993inresponsetotheEnergyPolicyAct(EPAct)of1992,thepartnershiphasprovidedtoolsandresourcesforvoluntary,community-basedprogramsthatdeployalternativefuelsacrossthecountry.
TobuildonCleanCities'successwithalternativefuelsandexpanditsimpact,itsfocuswasbroad-enedin2004toincorporateawiderrangeoftransportationtechnologiesthatcanhelpreducepetroleumconsumption.
Inmorethan80coalitions(seepages2-3),govern-mentagenciesandprivatecompaniescometogethervoluntarilyundertheumbrellaofCleanCities.
Thepartnershiphelpsallpartiesidentifymutualinterestsandmeettheirownobjectives—toimproveairquality,developregionaleconomicopportunities,andreduceourdependenceonimportedoil.
Theportfolioprovidesarangeofoptionsandflexibilitytomeetpetroleumdisplacementgoals.
Theseoptionsincludeusingtruckstopelectrifica-tionoronboardauxiliarypowertoreducefuelusebyidlingtrucks,hybridelectricvehicles,theexpandeduseofnonpetroleumfuels(e.

,low-levelblendsofethanolandbiodiesel)withconventionalfuels,andhigherefficiencyvehiclesanddrivingpractices,alongwiththecornerstoneoftheportfolio,alternativefuels.
AsdefinedbyEPAct,alternativefuelssupportedbyCleanCitiesarenaturalgas,ethanol,methanol,biodiesel,hydrogen,electricity,liquefiedpetroleumgas(propane),andP-Seriesfuel.
CleanCitiesdrawsstakeholdersfromlocal,state,andfederalagencies;publichealthandtransporta-tiondepartments;commercialfleets;transitagen-cies;andothergovernmentoffices;aswellasautomanufacturers,cardealers,fuelandequipmentsuppliers,publicutilities,andnonprofitassocia-tions.
Morethan4,800stakeholdershaveacceptedtheinvitationtocontributetothepartnership'smission.
CleanCitieshasoftenbeeninstrumentalinculti-vatinganalternativefuels"community,"wherepeoplelearnaboutawiderangeofoptionsandtechnologies.
Inaddition,ithelpscreatemarketsforalternativefuelvehicles(AFV),hybrids,fuelblends,fueleconomy,andidlereduction.
ACleanCitiescoalitioncanprovideaforumformemberstoleveragetheirresources,developjointprojects,collaborateonpublicpolicyissues,andpromotepetroleumdisplacementandcleanairtechnologies.
