Theyoftencreatefakeprofilestobuildtheironlinerelationships.

Thissurveyshowsthatrespondentswhosaytheywereatargetorvictimofarelationshipscamaremorelikelythannon-targetsornon-victimstoindicateexperiencinganegativechangeinfinancialstatus,familyrelationshipproblems,stressassociatedwithmoving,andjobloss.
Moreover,targetsorvictimsaremorelikelythannon-targetsornon-victimstoreportoftenhavingfeelingsoflonelinessandisolation.

Thissurveyalsoexploredcertainsocialandpsychologicalcharacteristicsandlifeeventstoseehowtheymayberelatedtobecomingatargetorvictimofanonlinerelationshipscam.

Sadultswhosaytheyhavebeentargetedorvictimizedinanonlinerelationshipscamandthosewhosaytheyhavenot.
Inparticular,thosewhohavebeentargetedorvictimizedmoreoftenexperiencefeelingsofsocialisolationandreportagreaternumbernegativelifeeventsthanthosewhohavenotbeentargetedorvictimized.
Thesurveyresultsindicatethatenhancedconsumeradvocacy,awarenesscampaigns,andpublicprotectioneffortsareneededtobetterinformconsumersaboutonlinerelationshipscamssotheycanprotecttheirhearts–andtheirwallets.
