Onlinerelationshipscammersusedatingsites,apps,chatrooms,andsocialmediatotargetandmeettheirpotentialvictims.
Theyoftencreatefakeprofilestobuildtheironlinerelationships.

Thispointstotheneedforgreaterawarenessof'redflags'peopleshouldlookfortopreventfallingvictimtothisscam,suchasbeingaskedformoneyortoopenfinancialaccounts.
Infact,welloverhalfofthevictimsreportedsufferingfinanciallossestothisscam.
Thissurveyalsoexploredcertainsocialandpsychologicalcharacteristicsandlifeeventstoseehowtheymayberelatedtobecomingatargetorvictimofanonlinerelationshipscam.
SignificantdifferenceswerefoundbetweenU.
Sadultswhosaytheyhavebeentargetedorvictimizedinanonlinerelationshipscamandthosewhosaytheyhavenot.
Inparticular,thosewhohavebeentargetedorvictimizedmoreoftenexperiencefeelingsofsocialisolationandreportagreaternumbernegativelifeeventsthanthosewhohavenotbeentargetedorvictimized.
Thesurveyresultsindicatethatenhancedconsumeradvocacy,awarenesscampaigns,andpublicprotectioneffortsareneededtobetterinformconsumersaboutonlinerelationshipscamssotheycanprotecttheirhearts–andtheirwallets.
