Somesoftwareapplicationshavetimingconstraintsfordatatransmittedandreceivedoncomports.
Insomecases,asoftwareapplicationwillnotwaitlongenoughtoreceivearesponsefromthemanagedserialdevice.
Asaresult,thesoftwareassumestheserialdeviceisnotrespondingandtimesout.
Ifincreasedlatencybecomesanissueforasoftwareapplication,implementaTCPsocketconnectioninthesoftware.
Ifthisisnotpossible,increasethetimeoutsettingsinthesoftwaretocompensatefortheadditionallatency.

RedirectedConnectionsMostsoftwareapplicationsrequiringSecureComPortRedirectorweredesignedtoconnectdirectlytotheserialdevicebeingmanaged.
Thisconnectionisachievedusingadirectcableconnectionfromacomportonthepersonalcomputer(PC)runningthesoftwareutilitytotheserialportoftheserialdevicebeingmanaged.
Withthisconfiguration,thePCandthemanagedserialdeviceresideonanisolatedserialnetwork.
ThetrafficpassedonthephysicalmediabetweenthemisintendedforeitherthePCortheserialdevice.
Latencyisnotanissueinthisscenario.
WhenthesamesoftwareapplicationsareusedwiththeSecureComPortRedirector,theapplicationsarenolongerdirectlyattachedtotheserialdevicebeingmanaged.
Instead,alltrafficbetweenthesoftwareapplicationandtheserialdeviceisroutedasfollows:1.
Fromavirtualcomport,thedataisstrippedoutofaserialpacketandplacedintoanIPpacket.

TheserialpacketissentfromthevirtualcomporttoanetworkinterfaceonthePC.
3.
Dataistransmittedoverthenetwork,throughswitchesorrouters,tothenetworkinterfaceonadeviceserver.

Fromthenetworkinterfaceonthedeviceserver,thedataconvertsfromanIPpacketbacktoaserialpacket.
5.
Onceinaserialpacket,dataistransmitteddownthephysicalmediatotheserialdevice.
Thisprocessintroduceslatency.
Theamountoflatencyassociatedwiththistypeofconnectionisdeterminedbytheamountofnetworklatency.
