Furthertothisrequest,theExecutiveSecretaryhasputinplaceinfrastructure,throughtheguidelinesforthefourthnationalreportsandthroughthevoluntaryfundforindigenousandlocalcommunityparticipationinmeetingsheldundertheConvention,tocollectthisinformationonanannualbasisandtomakeitavailabletomeetingsoftheWorkingGrouponArticle8(j)andRelatedProvisions.
StatisticsconcerningthevoluntaryfundforindigenousandlocalcommunityparticipationinmeetingsheldundertheConvention,aswellasstatisticsontheuseofrelevantConventionweb-pages,areavailableinthenotebytheExecutiveSecretaryonparticipatorymechanismsforindigenousandlocalcommunitiesintheworkoftheConvention(UNEP/CBD/WG8J/7/9).

AmajoraccomplishmentofthetenthmeetingoftheConferenceofthePartiestotheConventiononBiologicalDiversitywastheadoptionoftheNagoyaProtocolonAccesstoGeneticResourcesandtheFairandEquitableSharingofBenefitsArisingfromtheirUtilization.

TheProtocolprovidesatransparentlegalframeworkfortheeffectiveimplementationofoneofthethreeobjectivesoftheConventiononBiologicalDiversity:thefairandequitablesharingofbenefitsarisingoutoftheutilizationofgeneticresources,anditwillenterintoforce90daysafterthefiftiethinstrumentofratification.

AtthecoreoftheProtocolareobligationsrelatedtoaccesstogeneticresources,tothefairandequitablesharingofbenefitsarisingoutofgeneticresourcesaswellastocompliancewithnationalaccessandbenefit-sharing(ABS)legislationandmutuallyagreedterms.
TheProtocolcontainsimportantdevelopmentsforindigenousandlocalcommunities.
Itaddressestraditionalknowledgeassociatedwithgeneticresourcesheldbyindigenousandlocalcommunitiesaswellasgeneticresourcesthatareheldbyindigenousandlocalcommunities,wheretherightsofthesecommunitiesovertheseresourceshavebeenrecognized.

ThepreambletotheProtocolprovidesacontextfortheinterpretationofthetextoftheProtocol.
Itcontainssevenparagraphsofspecificrelevancetoindigenouspeoplesandlocalcommunitiesandtheirtraditionalknowledge.
TheseparagraphsincludesreferencestoArticle8(j),theinterrelationshipbetweengeneticresourcesandtraditionalknowledgeandtheirinseparablenature,thediversityofcircumstancesinwhichtraditionalknowledgeisownedorheld(includingbycountries),theidentificationoftherightfulholdersoftraditionalknowledge,theDeclarationontheRightsofIndigenousPeoples29.
