A Study on the Effects of Different Input Modes on Incidental

Abstract The present study has great theoretical and practical significance in theEnglish teaching and learning. The author proposes that it is better for teachers toapply different input modes especially text-audio-video in order to improvestudents’ efficiency in IVA gains and retentions During English learning it willpromote the accumulation of vocabulary for paying more attention to rewriting task ofthe contents that have been learnt.

Recently there are some researches about incidental vocabularyacquisition in second language learning but mostjust focus on reading or listeningnamely single-mode input.With the development of computer technology differentinput modes involve in the language learning especially video mode. Theeffectiveness of learning English under text-audio-video input has also beenconfirmed.The thesis will compare with different input modes on IVA and differenttasks on IVA under different input modes.The paper tries to answer the followingquestions
If the same information is showed in form of text audio text-audio ortext-audio-video could learners acquire incidental vocabulary knowledge and keepfor a longer period by each mode which input mode is the most effective one
There is a pretest main study and a delayed test which are composed of thewhole research.The experiment lasts for four week.The pretest is carried out duringthe first week.The main study is conducted two weeks later and the delayed test isconducted in the final week with the purpose of getting rid of side effects on reliability.400 second-year college students from Jiangxi University of technology are chosen asthe participants of this study.
During the study the key point is whether EFL students could achieve thevocabulary knowledge acquisition incidentally by different input modes and whichone is the most effective for vocabulary acquisition and retention.According to theprevious study frequent exposure to the target word is necessary to acquisition. Inforeign language learning settings there is no such good opportunity for highfrequency of exposure.However we need to choose the proper involvement loadcarefully for EFL in Chinese setting.After a cautious experiment we get somefindings from the results and discussions in the previous chapters.
