The following 4 famous paintings—from Jan van Eyck's portrait to Pablo Picasso'smasterpiece—have stood the test of time.

The Arnolfini Portrait

The Arnolfini Portrait of Jan van Eyck,an oil painting on wood produced in 1434, in which aman and a woman hold hands with a window behind him and a bed behind her, is undoubtedly oneof the masterpieces in the National Gallery,London. This painting is as visually interesting as it is

famed. It is also an informative document on fifteenth-c entury soc iety, through van Eyck's heavy us eof symbolism—while husbands went out to engage in business, wives concerned themselves withdomestic duties.

The Starry Night

Vincent Willem van Gogh painted The Starry Night, an oil on canvas (帆布), a moderatelyabstract landscape painting of an expressive night sky over a small hills ide village, during his12-month stay at the mental hospital near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence,France between 1889 and 1890.When the Museum of Modern Art in New York City purchased the painting from a private collectorin 1941, it was notwell known, but it has since become one of van Gogh's most famous works.

Gong Linna, renowned Chinese musician and founder of Chinese New Art Music, put hermusic teaching methods into practice for the first time at the Tracing Roots practice concert andmusic festival of the Affiliated High School of Peking University on May 23.

The first song of the concert,Search High and Low, is an allusion(暗指) to the classical poemLi Sao, “The road ahead will be long. I shall search high and low. ” “It's arranged to be sung byall performers, indicating that we should all search high and low for our roots, ” says Gong.

Gong believed that the popularization of Chinese music should rely on primary and secondaryschools rather than music academies. The children's passion for music and their outstandingperformance amazed Gong, “When singing, they are completely lost in the music.Music bringslight and richness to one's world. So, learning to sing is never about passing examinations, but aboutenjoying the music. ”

“Seeing the children perform my pieces, I realized I should write more songs for them, ” saidLao Luo,Gong's husband proudly. “It's a great encouragement for me to see how much they likethe songs, and they really need content related to Chinese culture. ”With an international vis ion,Gong will continue to write songs based on Chinese folk music or ancient poems.

Have you ever wondered when dogs first became “man's best friend” and the world'sfavourite pet? If you have then you're not alone. When and where dogs first began livingside-by-side with humans are questions that have caused hot debate among scientists. There are afew hard facts that all agree on.These include that dogs were once wolves and they were the firstanimal to be domesticated(驯养)by humans. They came to life some 15,000 years ago, before thedawn of agriculture.

Beyond that, there is little agreement. The earliest bones found that are unquestionable dogs andnot wolves date from 14,000 years ago. However, 30,000-year-old skulls (头骨) have beendiscovered in France and Belgium that are not pure wolves and that some scientists think could bedogs.

With such puzzling evidence, many scientists are now turning to DNA to find out when andwhere dogs were first domesticated. In one research project, tens of thousands of blood samples havebeen taken from street dogs around the world. The plan is to compare them with those of wolves. It'seven possible to analyse DNA from ancient bones. Tiny pieces of the 30,000-year-old skullsmentioned earlier are now being studied, and another DNA study has already shown that ancientdogs preserved in the Alaskan ice fields evolved(进化)from Asian wolves, not American ones.

Indeed, the ancient DNA may turn out to be more informative than the DNA of living dogs.Because dogs have accompanied humans around the world for thousands of years, their distributionmay tell us very little of their origins. This is why different groups of scientists believe that dogsvariously originated in eastern Asia,Europe or Africa.

But why were the animals domesticated in the first place? The most recent theory is that dogsdomesticated themselves, originally living in and around our ancient villages to eat any food thrownout.Today, this is a way of life still shared by three quarters of a billion unowned dogs worldwide.

28Which statement is generally accepted by scientists studying dogs?

A They originally were used as farm animals.

B They evolved from wolves found in Europe.

C They helped the development of agriculture.

D They were the first animal to be trained by humans.

29Why does the writer mention the 30,000-year-old animals' skulls in Para.2?

A To show that dogs were common in the past.

B To prove that dogs developed from Asian wolves.

C To suggest that dogs may have evolved much earlier.

D To argue that dogs were first kept in France and Belgium.

30 How did scientists determine the origins of the ancient dogs found in Alaska?

A By exam ining the animals'DNA.

B By analyzing the age of their bones.

C By studying the shape of their skulls.

D By comparing them with modern dogs.

31 Why did dogs start living with humans acc ording to the most rec ent theory?

A They were attracted by food.

B They were trapped by humans.

C They couldn't survive in the wild.

D They were trained to protect the villages.

“It's dangerous but we should win the battle with the virus as soon as possible, so that medicalstaff and patients can go back home

US writer Khalil Gibran(18831931) once wrote, “Tenderness and kindness are not signsof weakness and despair, but the manifestations of strength and resolution. ” It's true for themedic al workers.

Everyone has fear, especially when it comes to deadly diseases. But for medical staff, saving

lives comes first and is enough for them to be brave and stay on the front. They may look likeordinary people in daily life, but in these extraordinary times, they are heroes.
