Someofourfriendsthoughtweweretakingabigrisk,butIhadgreatfaith,continuingwithmyplans.

Moneyshoudbecarriedintravelerschecksasarule—$10denominationwilldo.
Takealong5to8percentin$1billstotakecareoflastminutespendingorgasolinenearborderswhenleavingthecountries,becausewhenpurchasingwithlargedenominationsyouwillbegivenchangeinnativemoneywhichyoudon'twishtotakewithyou.

Followthetrafficrulesandsigns,especiallywhengoingdowngradesandaroundcurves.

Thereisgreatdangerofrun-ningintoslides,cattle,rocks,orotherobjectsonthehighway—nottomentionpeoplewholovetowalkbvnightontheroad.

Panamaistheonlycountrywhichhaslawsagainstcattleonthehighway.
AlltheotherCentralAmericancountrieshavesignsontheroadswarningtolookoutforcattle.
Wemetquitealotofanimalsonthehighway.
Leaveearlyandnightisnotlikelytoovertakeyou.
Atleast,inthiswayyouwillhaveverylittle,ifany,nightdrivingtodo.
RecauseofthesizeofMexicowefounditnecessarytomakethreeAugust1963stopsgoingnorth,ontheeastside(BywayofComitan,MatiasRomeroandPuebla)beforereachingMexicoCity.
Onthereturntrip,forvariety'ssake,wetookthehighwayviaOaxaca,wheretherearelotsofcurvesandhills,butthehighwayisverywellpaved,andOaxacaandComitanweretheonlystopswehadtomakecomingback.
Andtalkingaboutwell-pavedroads,thesuperhighways—whereverthereisopportunitytomakeachoice—arebetterandfasterfortravel,withthelegalspeedlimitashighas110kilo-metersperhour(about70miles)insomeplaces.
Theolder,narrowroadsmaybeevenshorterthanthesuperhighway,buthavemanysharpcurves,annoyinghillsandreducedlegalspeeds.
Itisworththe5or8pesostollchargestogobysuperhighway.
Agreatdealoftimeissaved,too.
Makefriendswiththepeople.
Youcanlearnalotfromthemandaboutthemandtheircountrieswhichmightsaveyoumoneyandtime.
Nevertheless,bewaryoftoofriendlypeople.
Employeesofhotelscanalsobeofinvaluablehelpandarichsourceofinformation.

Theycankeepyouuptodateonroadconditionsoranylatechangesincondi-tionsinthecountry.

Thelocalhotelmanagementandtouristcommissionrepresentatives,es-peciallythoseinMexico,urgedthatwetakeataxiwhengoingaboutandoutoftownbecauseofthetrafficanddif-ficultyinfindingourwayaround.
Butwefound,afteracoupleofexcitingdaysfeelingourwayaboutthecity,thatwecoulddriveanywherewewantedtogowithlittletrouble.
Westudiedthemap(agood10-pesooneofMexicoCity)beforeleavingonanytrip.
Some-timesintheexcitementwewentupthewrongstreetandhaditroughgettingbackontherightone,butitwasstimu-latingfunalways.
Incidentally,themapsobtainableattheMexicanConsu-lateinPanamaCityshowallthetownswhichhavegasstations.
Thisisarealhelpforthetraveler.
Agreendotnearthenameofatownmeansyoucanbuygasthere.
Thetripcostusanaverageof$550each,whichincludedhotelsandpensions,meals,(inMexicofoodisseparatefromroom)guidesontwooccasions,souvenirs,gasoline,tune-up,smallrepairs,etc.
Wespentatleast1weekineachCentralAmericancountry,and3weeksinMexico.
Thewholetriptookusawayfromhomefortwowell-spentmonthsduringwhichtimewetraveled8,543miles.
Therearemanypublicparkingplaces(Called"Estacionamiento,""Pension,"or"BancodeCarros")inallthecountrieswhichstoreacarover-nightatveryreasonableprices.
Oneshouldneverriskleavingacarout-doorsatnight,foritinvitesriskingtheexperienceofhitchhikingbackhome.
Anotherthing:Neverbuyfromthefirststoreorshop.

Theexperi-encewillbeagreateye-opener.
Oneplacewewerecharged50pesosforbeautifulpolishedstonebook-ends,whiletheyaskedonly30pesosinanothershopforthesamething.

Correspondenceiscarriedonregu-larlybetweentheNavigationDivision,withthehelpoftheLocksDivision,andshipbuildingyardsthroughouttheworldonthesepointsforshipconstructionandconversion.
TheNavigationDivisionalsoischargedwithschedulinganddispatch-ingofvesselsfortransitstoensurecoordinatedcontroloftrafficthrough-outtheCanalandZonewaters;training,supervision,andassignmentofpilots;entranceandclearanceofvesselsattheterminalports,includingcoordinationofboardingparties;assignmentofberthsforships,andoperationoftug-boatsandlaunchesforservicingofshipping.

Thesefieldsare:CoordinationofworkingrulesandpracticesbetweentheAtlanticandPacificportcaptains'areas;overallsupervisionofmarinetrafficcontrolthroughouttheentirelengthoftheCanal;uniformworkpracticeswithintheNavigationDivi-sion;coordinatingNavigationDivisionunits,theLocksDivisionandDredgingDivision;coordinatingpersonnelandbudgetaryplansandpoliciesfortheNavigationDivisionasawhole;pro-posingandcoordinatingwiththerestoftheCanalunitsaffectedonimprove-mentstonavigationintheCanal.
Duringfiscalyear1962,11,424oceangoingvesselstransitedtheCanal.
GrossexpensesoftheNavigationDivisionduringthisperiodtotaled$8,545,000,andrevenuesderivedfromrentaloftugsandlaunches,harborpilotage,anddeckhandservicesamountedto$4,400,000.
EfficiencyofoperationoftheNaviga-tionDivisionisreflecteddirectlyontheledgersofboththePanamaCanalandshipownersandoperators,deter-miningwhetherthereareeconomiesorincreasedcostspertonofshippingtransited.
