fiABSTRACT:Theintegratedharvestingofindustrialroundwoodandenergywoodbytheso-called'two-pilecuttingmethod'hasincreasedstronglyinyoungforestsinFinlandduringthelasttwoyears.
ThestudiescarriedoutbyMetstehoOy,MetshallitusandTTSResearchi)determinedthetimeconsumptionandproductivityincuttingworkwhenusingtheintegratedcuttingoffirst-thinningwood,ii)clarifiedthedevelopmentofthetotalremovalinintegratedharvestingoperation,andiii)investigatedthequalityofpulpwoodpoleswhenusingintegratedcuttingwithmulti-treehandling.
Thestudiesindicatedthatthetotalremovalinintegratedwoodharvestingincreasessignificantlycomparedtothatofconventional,separateroundwoodharvesting.
Whenthetotalremovalfromtheharvestingsiteincreasedconsiderably,therewasasignificantincreaseintheproductivityofcuttingworkinintegratedwoodharvestingcomparedtothesituationinseparatepulpwoodharvesting.
Inaddition,thedelimbingqualityandbuckingaccuracyofthepulpwoodpolesobtainedinmulti-treeprocessingwerecomparabletothoseproducedinsingle-treehandling.
Therewerenoproblemswithmeasuringtheworkoutputbyagrapplescaleattachedtotheboomoftheforwarder.
Asthestudiesindicatedverypromisingexperiencesinintegratedwoodcutting,integratedharvestingislikelytocontinuetoincreaseinbothfirstandlaterthinningsinFinland.
