InDecember,theUnitedNationsGeneralAssemblyheldacommemorativehigh-levelmeeting,AWorldFitforChildrenPlus5,atwhichgloballeadersreviewedprogresstowardsthegoalssetatthe2002UNGeneralAssemblySpecialSessiononChildren.
TheireffortsweresupportedbyacomprehensivereportbytheUnitedNationsSecretary-General,ChildrenandtheMillenniumDevelopmentGoals,whichincludedabroadrangeofevidence-basedanalysisanddataprovidedbyUNICEF.
Theavailabilityofthisnewdataandanalysis,combinedwithstrategicengagementwithinternationalandlocalactors,hasinspiredarenewedinternationalfocusontheachievementoftheMDGsandtheprotectionoftherightsofchildren.
In2007,UniteforChildren,UniteagainstAIDScontinuedtofocustheinternationalcommunity'sattentiononworktowardsanAIDS-freegeneration.
InBotswana,acountrywithoneoftheworld'shighestHIVprevalencerates,mother-to-childtransmissionfellto4percentanditscoverageofpregnantwomenreceivingantiretroviralprophylaxis–atgreaterthan95percentin2006–isthehighestinAfrica.
The'mothers2mothers'programme,agrassrootsorganizationofmotherswhoareHIV-positiveandhavehealthybabies,reportedthatitwasreaching20,000womenamonthinKenya,Lesotho,SouthAfricaandZambiawithinformation,supportandpersonalskillstohelpthemlivewithHIVandtoprotecttheirnewbornsfrommother-to-childtransmission.
TherightsofchildrenwithdisabilitieswerethefocusofapartnershipbetweenUNICEFandSpecialOlympicsInternational,launchedatthe2007SpecialOlympicsWorldSummerGamesinShanghai,China.
ThispartnershipcomplementsexistingcollaborativeeffortswithOperationSmile,SavetheChildrenandothers,andfollowsthe2006adoptionoftheConventionontheRightsofPersonswithDisabilities.
AcceleratedLearningProgrammesandothereducationalinnovationsallowedmillionsofchildreninLiberiaandSouthernSudantogotoschoolin2007,afterdecadesofarmedconflict.

Yet,SouthernSudanisinthemidstofaneducationalwhirlwind,whereincreasingschoolattendance,improvingqualityandbuildingacentralschoolsystemareprogressingsimultaneously.
SouthernSudan's'GotoSchool'initiativeisanexampleofrecentheroiceffortstoinvestineducationduringemergenciesandpost-crisistransitions.
With$200millionfromtheGovernmentoftheNetherlandstoUNICEFoverafour-yearperiod,educationinitiativesaretakingrootin19areasemergingfromconflictandotheremergencies.
InadditiontoSouthernSudan,recipientsoftheseeducationalinvestmentsareBolivia,Chad,Colombia,Cted'Ivoire,theDemocraticRepublicoftheCongo,Guinea,Iraq,Kosovo,Liberia,Myanmar,Nepal,theOccupiedPalestinianTerritory,thePhilippines,SierraLeone,SriLanka,Timor-Leste,TurkeyandUganda.
Countriesemergingfromcrisisoftenfallbetweenreliefaidanddevelopmentfunding,losingprecioustimetosimplyrebuildortobuildbackbetter.
Recentinvestmentinemergencyandpost-crisistransitioneducationisbasedonfiveprinciples:(1)achild'srighttoaneducationisnotabrogatedbycalamity,(2)theMillenniumDevelopmentGoalscannotbereachedwhenvastnumbersofchildrenareleftbehind,(3)schoolsareeffectivehumanitarianinterventions,assuagingtrauma,providingpsychosocialcareanddisseminatingaid,informationandbasicservices,(4)educationisatangible,earlypeacedividendthatralliesthecommunityaroundanoblecause,(5)crisesarewindowsofopportunitytobuildeducationsystemsthatinsteadofcreatingwallsofenmityarebuildingbridgesofharmonyandunderstanding.
TheseprinciplesanchorSouthernSudan'sefforts.
The'GotoSchool'initiativeisdesignedtobringthehardest-to-reach–girls,orphans,internallydisplacedchildrenandreturnees–intotheclassroom.
CommunityGirls'Schoolshavegivenunprecedentededucationalopportunitiestogirlstooyoungtowalklongdistancestoregularschools.
TheAcceleratedLearningProgrammeallowsolderchildrentocompleteeightyearsofprimaryschoolinfouryears.
Teachersandschooladministratorsarebeingtrainedinchild-centredpedagogy,permanentschoolswithsafewaterandseparatesanitationfacilitiesarebeingbuilt,andeducationalsuppliesarebeingdistributedtostudentsandteachers.

Theatrocitiesthatshacklewomenandgirlstosecond-classcitizenshipalsocontributetosoaringchildandmaternalmortalityrates.
UNICEFhasforgedallianceswithotherUNagencies,donors,non-governmentalorganizationsandcivilsocietytostrengthenprotectiveenvironmentsforchildren.
Effortsincluderallyinggovernmentstomakecommitmentstochildren,advocatingforchild-centredlegislation,providingdirectservices,challengingattitudesandcustomsthatareharmfultowomenandchildren,monitoringandreportingviolationsofchildren'srights,developingyoungpeople'slifeskillsandencouragingopendiscussion.
