Acomplementarystudieselectiveisacoursethatinvolvesmaterialthatcomplementsthetechnicalcontentofthecurriculum.
Tobecountedascomplementarystudiesacoursemustsatisfyeachofthefollowing:a.
InaccordancewiththecriteriaoftheCanadianEngineeringAccreditationBoard(CEAB),inacomplementarystudieselectivecoursetheprincipalsubjectmattermustdealwithcentralissues,methodologiesandthoughtprocessesofthehumanitiesandsocialsciences.
Accordingly,complementarystudiescoursesaremostoftencoursesofferedbytheFacultiesofHumanitiesandSocialSciences,butcoursesfromotherareassuchasFineArtsandBusinesswillbeconsidered.

ThecourseisoutsidetheothercoursecategoriesintheCEABcriteria,i.
e.
,thecourseisnotprimarilyMathematics,BasicScience,EngineeringScienceorEngineeringDesignasdefinedintheCEABcriteria.
Acoursewhoseprimaryemphasisiscomputerscience,science,mathematicsorstatistics,forexample,isnotacceptableasacomplementarystudieselective.
c.
Asubstantialportionofacomplementarystudieselectivecoursemustincludematerialthatisnotcoveredelsewhereinthestudent'sprogram.
Forexample,acourseineconomics,whichdoescountascomplementarystudiesintheCEABguidelines,cannotbeusedasanelectiveifithasasubstantialoverlapwiththematerialcoveredintherequiredengineeringeconomicscourse(ENGR280).

ComplementarystudiescreditwillbegivenforcoursestransferredfromanotherinstitutionatthediscretionoftheFaculty.
StudentsalreadyregisteredinanUVicprogramshouldobtainapprovalbeforeregisteringforacourseelsewherewhichtheyseektotransfertoUVicforcomplementarystudiescredit.
3.
Studentsmustseekapprovalofacomplementarystudiescourseinadvanceifitisnotontheapprovedcomplementarystudieslist,whetheritistobetakenatUVicorelsewherefortransfercredit.
4.
TheBEng/BSEngStudentProgramsCommitteemakesdecisionsregardingwhetherornotcoursesareacceptableforcomplementarystudiescredit.
Alistofcoursessuitableforcreditascomplementarystudieselectivesisprovidedoverleaf.
5.
NeithertheFacultynortheUniversityisresponsibleforramifications,financialorotherwise,arisingshouldastudentenrollinacoursethattheFacultysubsequentlydeemsunsuitableforcomplementarystudiescredit.
