Teamsofstudentsselectaproblem,createasolution,thenpresenttheirsolutioninacompetitionagainstotherteamsinthesameproblemanddivision.
Therearemanynuancesoftheprogramthatareexplainedfurtherinthisguide,butherearesomeofthebasicsofparticipation:1.
Studentsworkinteamsofuptosevenmembersundertheguidanceofanadultcoach.

Teamsspendweeksormonths,attheirownpace,workingtogetherandcreatingsolutionstolong-termproblems.
Everyyear,therearesixlong-termproblemsdesignedforvehicle,technical,classicalartsandliterature,structure,performance,andprimarycategories.

It'simportantthatteamscreatetheirsolutionswithoutusingtheideasandassistanceofothers.
Thereisvalueinlettingteamssucceedandfailontheirownmerits,especiallywhenachievementisratedoneffort,asmuchasonresults.

Thecoachorcoacheswillprovidesupervisionandhandlelogisticssuchasschedulingmeetings,makingsurepaperworkisdoneproperly,gettingtheteamtocompetition,teachingthemhowtosolvedifferences,andsoon.
Theymayberesponsibleforrecruitingandselectingteammembers.
Thecoachwillmakesuretheteamunderstandsthelimitationsofitslong-termproblemandoverseebrainstormingandspontaneouspracticesessions.
Whenteammembersgetanidea,thecoachorcoachescanmakesuretheyobtaintheskillsrequiredtocarryoutthatidea.

Second,FormaTeamUltimately,eachmembershipiscontrolledbytheschool'sororganization'sadministration,butthecoachisresponsibleforselectingthebeststudentsfortheteamundertheguidelinessetbytheadministration.
It'simportanttorecognizethatallstudentscanbenefitfromparticipationinOdysseyoftheMind,andthatperformanceintheclassroomdoesnotdirectlycorrelatewithsuccessintheprogram.
Manystudentshavehighlydevelopedcreativeproblem-solvingabilitiesbutdonothavetheopportunitytoapplythemintheclassroom.
ParticipationinOdysseyoftheMindremovestheapprehensionandself-consciousnessthatmayinhibitstudentsfrombecomingmoreinvolvedintheireducation.

Third,MeettheParentsIt'salwaysagoodideatoholdaninitialmeetingofteammembersandtheirparents.
Mostlikely,theparentswillsupporttheirchild'sinvolvementintheprogramandwillwanttohelp.
Itisveryimportant,however,thatyouletthemknowtheirlimitations.
Makecleartherulesforoutsideassistance.
Stressthattheirchildrenwillreapthefullbenefitsofcreativeproblem-solvingiftheycreatetheirsolutionthemselves.
Parentsneedtounderstandwhatwillbeexpectedofthemregardingmoney,time,transportation,andsoon.
Findoutwhatdaysandtimesareconvenientfromafamilyperspectiveanddevelopapracticescheduleaccordingly.
Makesureyouinformtheparentsofthecompetitiondateswellaheadoftimesotheydon'tscheduleactivitiesthatconflictwiththosedates.
Gettingtoknowtheparentsisawaytolearnabouttheresources,skillsandfacilitiesthattheyhavetooffer.
Parentsmaybewillingtoteachskillsthatteammembersneedtoexecutetheirsolution—carpentry,sewing,dancing,etc.
Parentscanalsosupplygeneralinformationonsubjectssuchasengineeringandscientificprinciples,andtheyareagoodresourcetoserveasjudges,scorekeepers,ortournamentassistants.

Thismaybearesultof"thinkingtoohard.

Onewaytoovercomeamentalblockintheproblem-solvingprocessistoholdabrainstormingsession.
Thepurposeofbrainstormingistogenerateasmanyideasaspossible.
Themoreideasateamhastochoosefrom,thegreaterthechancesareoffindingonethatissuccessful.
Ideasaregeneratedrapidly,whichpreventsindividualsfromdwellingonwhyanideamightnotwork.
Evaluationoftheideascomesatalaterstageofsolutiondevelopment.
