Hethoughtthatitwasnotonlyhisdutytoguideusdownthoserivers,anddowhathewaspaidfordoing,buttoentertainuswithstoriescuriousandweird,ancientandmodernstrange,andfamiliar.
ManyofthemIhaveforgotten,andIamgladIhave,butthereisoneIshallneverforget.
Theoldguidewasleadingmycamelbyitshalteralongthebanksofthoseancientrivers,andhetoldmestoryafterstoryuntilIgrewwearyofhisstorytellingandceasedtolisten.
IhaveneverbeenirritatedwiththatguidewhenhelosthistemperasIceasedlistening.
ButIrememberthathetookoffhisTurkishcapandswungitinacircletogetmyattention.
Icouldseeitthroughthecornerofmyeye,butIdeterminednottolookstraightathimforfearhewouldtellanotherstory.
ButalthoughIamnotawoman,Ididfinallylook,andassoonasIdidhewentrightintoanotherstory.

Whentheguidecamebackandtookupthehalterofmycamel,hewentrightaheadwiththestory,intothesecondchapter,justasthoughtherehadbeennobreak.
ThemanwhopurchasedAliHafed'sfarmonedayledhiscamelintothegardentodrink,andasthatcamelputitsnoseintotheshallowwaterofthatgardenbrook,AliHafed'ssuccessornoticedacuriousflashoflightfromthewhitesandsofthestream.
Hepulledoutablackstonehavinganeyeoflightreflectingallthehuesoftherainbow.
Hetookthepebbleintothehouseandputitonthemantelwhichcoversthecentralfires,andforgotallaboutit.

AbouteightyearsagoIdeliveredthislectureinacitythatstandsonthatfarm,andtheytoldmethataonethirdownerforyearsandyearshadbeengettingonehundredandtwentydollarsingoldeveryfifteenminutes,sleepingorwaking,withouttaxation.

ThemanwhoownedthatterritoryonwhichthecitytoTitusvillenowstands,andthosePleasantvillevalleys,hadstudiedthesubjectfromtheseconddayofGod'screationcleardowntothepresenttime.

WhileIwouldhavepreferredsuchanaudienceasthat,becausetheyaremostsusceptible,astheyhavenotgottenintoanycustomthattheycannotbreak,theyhavenotmetwithanyfailuresaswehaveandwhileIcouldperhapsdosuchanaudienceasthatmoregoodthanIcandogrownuppeople,yetIwilldothebestIcanwiththematerialIhave.

Itisafactthatthediamondswerethere,fortheyhavebeendiscoveredandsoldandthattheywerecarrieddownthereduringthedriftperiod,fromsomenorthernlocality.
