The Construction of Primary School English

Interactive Teaching Model

1. Intr o d u c ti o n

As China has been increasingly entangled in the global village,English plays an important part in the international communicationsin recent years, and it is obviously a necessary and fundamentalcourse in primary school English education. But the pupils are sti l lvery young, there are some unique characteristics of primary schoolstudents’ learning English. They are very curious about everything, but they are prone to be affected by adults  and their conscious

attention is shorter compared with teenagers or adults and it haspoor persistence. Finding proper ways to stimulate primary schoolstudents’ interest in learning is very essential .

Researches have proved that interactive teaching model isbeneficial to the learning of the language. Interactive teachingfocuses on cooperation between teachers and students. It is notteacher-centered. According to William and Burden (1977: 111) ,children are born to a social world, and learning occurs throughinteraction with other people. We learn a language through using thelanguage to interact meaningfully with other people. Interaction isalso of significance in English teaching in primary schools.

Teachers more or less use some kinds of interactions in class, however, it seems that these interaction do not work so well as theyare expected. Since the teachers may not take the pupils’characteristics of learning into consideration, pupils interactpassively or unwillingly, and in return, the teachers might beaffected by their negative emotions, which lead to a malignant circlein English education.

There are some strategies that can be used in primary schoolEnglish teaching according to the characteristics of pupils . There isa saying that “Interest is the best teacher.”. If the pupils areinterested in learning English, they will be willing to learn Englishby their own will . Using body language and pictures are efficientways to arouse their interest . The friendly appearance of teacherscan greatly encourage students’ enthusiasm in learning. Primaryschool students are often more interested in pictures than words, so,when they are asked to draw pictures, they can be fully absorbed instudying very soon. Role playing is also a good way contributing togood interaction characterized by team work and cooperative learning.

5

Through cooperation, students can come over fears about havingEnglish class, and can interact well with each other. With animportant part through the growth of human beings, competition canalso be applied in English teaching in class. It arouses pupils’interest in learning and enables them to learn English actively andeasily. With the development of economy, computers are becomingwidely-used nowadays. By using multimedia in teaching and learning, the students can not only enjoy playing, but also learn English aswell .

The strategies mentioned above are all efficient in Englishteaching based on the characteristics of pupils . It is obvious thatthere are some other workable strategies. If they can make for goodinteractions between teachers and students, and can develop students’ability in English learning, they are also advisable.

2.Definition of Interactive Teaching Model

Interactive teaching is a new teaching model that distinguishesfrom the traditional one, which emphasizes the importance ofteachers’ and students’ participation. This teaching model requiresthat both teachers and students take part in the class, throughinteractive teaching, students and teachers exchange information, experience, ideas, attitudes or feelings and so on. For example, ateacher asking a student a question and the student answering it isan interaction between the teacher and the student. Besides verbalcommunication, nonverbal communication, such as body language used inclass, is also a part of interactive teaching. Interactive teachingneeds the teachers to interact and challenge students, leading themto come up with new ideas. Interactive teaching values students’ ownideas and aims at empowering students to be independent learners and

willing to learn English well .

Interactive teaching model is first put forward by Palincsar

(1982: 133) . He firstly notes that it is a model to train students’reading strategy based on a scaffolding idea. Interactive teachingrefers to an instructional activity that takes place in the formof adialogue between teachers and students regarding segments of text .The dialogue is structured by the use of four strategies:summarizing, question generating, clarifying, and predicting. Theteacher and students take turns assuming the role of teacher inleading this dialogue.

Constructivists believe that interactive teaching is designed bythe interactive activities of dialogues between teachers andstudents. Interactions between teachers and students refer to themutual effect and influence between them. What’s more, the mutualeffect and influence is not only on the aspect of cognitiveinformation, it is also on the emotive information. The constructionof students’ knowledge can be promoted through communicating, discussing, arguing and cooperating between teachers and students, namely, the students are learning during communication. In suchcircumstance, teachers are the controller, manager and promoter ofthe classroom teaching. The purpose of interactive teaching is tofacil itate a group effort between teacher and students as well asamong students in the task of bringing meaning to the text. Teachersare supposed to encourage the students to participate in the languageactivities.

Zhan Sen and Cai Jun (2006: 133) note that interactive teachingmodel refers to the interactions between principal parts, includinginteractions between teachers and students, and interactions betweenstudents and students. Both the teachers and students take part in

7

teaching activities. They accept and respect each other, promotingthe overall development of students. It is an open and constructivenew teaching model . Interaction is not the unidirectional and l inearimpact from teachers. It is the mutual and interactive impact fromboth teachers and students. And meanwhile, the interaction is not aninterrupting one; it is a continuous one. In essence, interactionoccurs in various circumstances. It is an interactive systemconsisting different forms and contents.

Definitions of interactive teaching may vary from person toperson, but the essence of all definitions are the same, aiming athelping students to learn well through the cooperation of teachersand students.

3.The Necessity and Importance of English Interactive Teaching

Tsui (1995: 156) , a famous educational expert in Hong Kong pointsout that the process and success of the course are largely dependenton the interaction between students and teachers, thus, teachers’understanding of classroom interaction is beneficial to the foreignlanguage teaching. In the past twenty years, classroom interaction,as a second language learning course method, has been discussed fromdifferent point of views, from the study of foreign language to non-native English teachers’ roles of classroom instruction. It isconcluded that the interactions between teachers and the students, students and materials play an essential role in stimulatingstudents’ learning.

According to William and Burden (1977: 111) , children are born toa social world, and learning occurs through interaction with otherpeople. We learn a language through using the language to interactmeaningfully with other people. Classroom interaction has become amajor part of language instruction, which can never be neglected.

8

Classroom interaction contains interactions among teachers andstudents, during which both teachers and students are the center ofthe class. Teachers try their best to stimulate students, andstudents follow up cooperatively. Through such interactions, studentscan successfully develop their learning skills .

3.1 The necessity of English interactive teaching

As Jia Guanj ie (2003: 39) has mentioned that there are four goalsof English teaching in primary schools. First, the students shouldpreliminarily master English, having the ability of communication andunderstanding of this language. Second, students are required to knowsome culture of English through learning it . They need to learnsomething about the different thinking styles of English speakingcountries. Third, since English is a synthetic course, students inprimary schools also need to learn the basic knowledge of l iving inthe social world. Finally, teachers should foster the interest ofstudents’ learning in English. And interactive teaching can helpstudents learn well in English and is absolutely necessary forachieving the four goals.

3.2 The importance of good interactive teaching

In the first place, good interactive teaching can promoteemotional communication between teachers and students. If there isgood interactive relationship between teachers and students, thestudents are confident in their teachers and regard teachers as goodfriends, in return, teachers may be fi l led of confidence to finishthe teaching task, and will work harder to prepare teaching materialsand work harder to teach students. This kind of teaching offers avirtuous circle in English learning.

In the second place, good interactive teaching is beneficial to
