PRINCIPLESAcademicRegulationsforPostgraduateDegreesbyResearchandThesisrelatetotheresearchdegreeofferingsofDublinCityUniversity(DCU).
TheyaredesignedtosafeguardboththeacademicstandardsoftheUniversityandtheinterestsofindividualstudents.
TheseregulationsapplytotwotypesofdoctoralawardsofferedbytheUniversity–DoctorofPhilosophy(PhD)andProfessionalDoctorate.
IssuesrelatingtoHigherDoctorates(DSc,DEng,DLitt,LLD)aredealtwithinaseparatedocument,ProvisionsandRegulations:HigherDoctorates.
Inadditiontomakingdoctoralawards,theUniversitymakesawardsatMaster'slevelonthebasisofresearch,andthesearealsosubjecttotheseregulations.
TheseregulationsareguidedbytheUniversity'sMarksandStandards;theIrishUniversitiesQualityBoard's'GoodPracticeintheOrganisationofPhDProgrammesinIrishHigherEducation',2ndedition(2009);andtheNationalFrameworkforDoctoralEducation(2015).
TheregulationsapplytoallresearchstudentsregisteredinDCU,irrespectiveoftheinstitutioninwhichtheycommencedtheirstudies.
ReferenceismadeinthedocumentwhereanexceptionappliesforstudentsfirstregisteredwithStPatrick'sCollege,Drumcondra(SPD)orMaterDeiInstituteofEducation(MDI).
Theseregulationsaresubjecttochange.
Inanygivenacademicsession,astudentissubjecttotheregulationsthatareinplaceatthebeginningofthatacademicsession.

1DoctoralAwardsThedoctoraldegreeisoneofthehighestacademicqualificationsawardedbytheUniversityandisatLevel10ontheNationalFrameworkofQualifications.
Itisawarded,withoutclassification,tosuccessfulcandidatesonthestrengthofabodyoforiginalworkofscholarshippreparedandpresentedinaccordancewithinternationally-acceptedacademicstandards.
Allcandidatesfordoctoraldegreeswillbeexaminedinthesamemannerthroughexternalandinternalexaminationofthesubmittedthesis,followedbyavivavoceexamination.

1DoctorofPhilosophyThePhDmayvaryinformatofsubmission,asoutlinedbelow.
However,thesameacademicstandardsapplyinallcases.
ThedegreeofPhDisawardedinrecognitionofresearchwhichhasmadeasignificantandcoherentcontributiontoknowledge.
ThedegreeofPhDisawarded,withoutclassification,onthebasisofsuccessfulcompletionandexaminationoftheresearchthesis.
Thethesishasanominalvalueof270ECTScredits.
ThecorecomponentofaPhDprogrammeistheadvancementofknowledgethroughoriginalresearch.
Atthesametime,thePhDisdesignedtomeettheneedsofanemploymentmarketthatiswiderthanacademia.
Inthatcontext,thePhDinvolvesahigh-qualityresearchexperience,trainingandoutputconsistentwithinternationalnormsandbestpractice.
Tosupporttheoriginalresearchactivity,thefollowingelementsareadvised:Page5of36-aformalisedintegratedprogrammeofeducation,training,andpersonalandprofessionaldevelopmentactivitieswhichisplannedandoftenthematicallyfocused;-thedevelopmentofdiscipline-specificknowledge,researchskillsandgeneric/transferableskills;and-declaredoutcomesandgraduateattributesinlinewithnationalandinternationalbestpractice.
TheUniversityiscommittedtoprovidingitsresearchstudentswiththebestpossibleresearchexperience.
Inthatcontext,itisverysupportiveofresearchstudentsengagedinPhDresearchwhowishtotakeadditionalcoursestoenhancetheirgenericanddisciplinaryresearchskills.
StudentscantakeECTScreditsbymeansofdiscipline-specificmodules,genericresearchandtransferableskills,asagreedintheirPersonalDevelopmentPlan(PDP).
Studentswhoopttotakesuchmodulesmusthavethepermissionoftheirsupervisors.
Thesuccessfulcompletionofsuchmoduleswillberecordedonthestudent'stranscript.
AllmoduledescriptorsrelatingtomodulesnotalreadyaccreditedaspartofanawardprogrammearesubjecttopriorapprovalbytheGraduateResearchStudiesBoard.
ResultsofmoduleswillbeapprovedbytheGTE(GraduateTrainingElements)AwardBoard.
CandidateswhowishtopursueastructuredPhDprogrammewillundertakediscipline-specificmodules,researchskillscourses,andgenericandtransferableskillscourses,asagreedintheirPersonalDevelopmentPlan(PDP)and/orpartnershipagreement,tothevalueofatleast20ECTScredits,nomorethan90ECTScredits,buttypicallyintherange30-60ECTScredits.
Normally,10ECTScreditswillrelatetoresearchskills,transferableandgenericskillsmodules.
ModelbasedonCollaborationwithEnterpriseTheUniversityrecognisesthevalueofPhD-levelresearchwhichemergesfromorisconductedwithinthecontextofacompany,healthcaresetting,voluntarysectororganisation,publicbodyorothersuchorganisation.
SuchcollaborativeresearchfacilitatestheprofessionaldevelopmentofthePhDstudentthroughtheintegrationofacademiawithothersectorsandcontributestothecreationofnewknowledgerelevanttotheneedsofsociety,theeconomyandpolicy-formingbodies,throughoriginalresearch.
Theeducationaloutcomesmust,inallcases,correspondtotheintellectualchallengeofaPhD,sotheprojectmustbecarefullyplannedandnegotiatedtoensurethatthispotentialexists.
ThedegreeofPhDisawarded,withoutclassification,onthebasisofathesissubmittedforexamination.
Thethesishasanominalvalueof270ECTScredits.
Atthetimeofinitialregistration,itisthesupervisor'sresponsibilitytoensurethatanagreementbetweentheexternalorganisationandUniversityisputinplacewhichcoverssuchissuesas:funding,intellectualpropertyownership,timewhichtheresearchstudentwillspendoncampusorintheexternalorganisationandtheroleoftheexternalorganisationinthesupervisionofthestudent.
ItisalsoimportantthatDCU'sexpectationsregardingresearchawardsaremadecleartothecollaboratingenterprise.
Studentsregisteredunderthismodelcantakeamaximumof30additionalECTScreditsbymeansofdiscipline-specificmodules,genericresearchandtransferableskills,andactivecontributiontotheUniversity.
Studentswhoopttotakesuchmodulesmusthavethepermissionoftheirsupervisors.
Thesuccessfulcompletionofsuchmoduleswillberecordedonthestudent'stranscript.
AllmoduledescriptorsaresubjecttoapprovalbytheGraduateResearchStudiesBoard.

Aswellasthemonographformat,theUniversityofferstheopportunityforcandidatestosubmittheirresearchfortheawardofPhDintheformatofpublishedwork,ofartefactssuchasmusiccompositions,andthroughcreativeorperformancepractice.
Inthecaseofformatsotherthanamonograph,thesubmissionofanaccompanyingsetofchapterswhichmustsatisfytheappointedexaminersisalsorequired.
Requirementsforeachformataregiveninsection9oftheseregulations.

3ProfessionalDoctorateTheProfessionalDoctorateisawardedinanumberofdisciplines,withoutclassification,onthebasisofaresearchthesisandotherwork.
TheProfessionalDoctoralProgrammeisusuallyapart-timeresearch-basedprogramme.
ThecoreaimoftheProfessionalDoctorateistomakesignificantcontributionstoknowledgeofprofessionalpracticethroughresearch.
Inthatcontext,theProfessionalDoctorateaimstofosterprofessionaldevelopmentthroughresearchaswellasmeetingtherequirementsofrigourandoriginalityexpectedofadoctorate.
AProfessionalDoctoratenormallyinvolvestheproductionofanumberofsignificantpiecesofwrittenworkfollowedbyathesis.
ThetotalECTScreditswillbeintherange240-270.
Thethesisshouldconstitutenofewerthanhalfthetotalcredits.
Forcomponentsotherthanthethesis,theregulationsrelatingtoassessmentandprogressionareasoutlinedinMarksandStandards.
TheUniversitycurrentlyawardsthefollowingProfessionalDoctorates:EdDDoctorofEducationDBADoctorofBusinessAdministrationDPsychDoctorofPsychotherapyDMusPerfDoctorofMusicinPerformance.

Itnominallyhasavalueof180ECTScredits.
Master'sstudentsmayregisterforamaximumof20ECTScreditsofdiscipline-specificmodules,researchskillscoursesorgenericskillscourses.
TheMaster'sdegreecanbeundertakeninthecontextofcollaborationwithenterprise.

GENERALREGULATIONS2.
1AcademicCouncilhasoverallresponsibilityinallmattersrelatedtograduateresearchdegrees.
TheUniversity'sGraduateResearchStudiesBoardisresponsibleforallpoliciesandproceduresrelatingtograduateresearchandreportstoAcademicCouncilonthese.

2TheUniversityispreparedtoconsiderproposalsforprogrammesofgraduateresearchworkconcernedwithfundamentalresearchorotherareasofscholarshiporwithanyaspectsofindustrial,commercial,enterprise,clinical,artisticorprofessionalactivity.

3StudentsregisteredforgraduateresearchdegreeprogrammesareentitledtothesamerightsandprivilegesasallotherregisteredstudentsandaresubjecttothesameCodeofDiscipline.
StudentsmustcomplywiththeUniversity'sregulationsgoverninggraduateresearchdegreesandareobligedtoadheretotheUniversity'sCodeofGoodResearchPractice,itsresearchethicsguidelines,theDCUCodeofPracticeonAuthorshipandtheDCUAcademicIntegrityandPlagiarismPolicy.

4Astudentmaynormallyberegisteredatanytimeforonedegreeonly,andworktobesubmittedforanawardcannotbesubmittedelsewhereforadegreeorothersimilaraward.
AnyexceptionalapplicationfordualregistrationmustbemadetotheGraduateResearchStudiesBoard.

5StudentsontheDoctorofEducationareregisteredwiththeFaculty.
AllotherresearchstudentsmustregisterwithasingleSchool,notwithstandingthefactthathe/shemayconducttheresearchacrossanumberofSchoolsorinoneormoreUniversityResearchCentre.

6Inthecaseofinterdisciplinaryresearchprojects,theSchoolassumingresponsibilityfortheprojectmustbetheSchoolwithwhichthestudentisregistered.

7TheUniversityencouragescollaborationinprogrammesofresearchbetweentheUniversityandothereducational,industrial,commercial,professionalorresearchinstitutions.
SucharrangementsaregovernedbytheUniversityPolicyonResearchSupervisionandAwardsinCollaborationwithOtherInstitutions.

Allofficialcommunicationsandadministrativeproceduresrelatingtograduateresearchapplications,offersofplaces,registration,continuedregistration,annualprogressreports,examinationproceduresandresultsshallbeconductedthroughandbytheRegistry.
3.
QUALIFICATIONREQUIREMENTS3.
1Priortosubmittinganapplication,acandidatemustconsultwiththeappropriateSchoolontheproposedprogrammeofstudyandmustascertainwhetherornottheSchoolwouldbepreparedtorecommendhis/herapplicationtotheUniversity3.
2Toregisterforagraduateresearchprogramme,acandidatemustnormallyhaveobtainedaprimarydegreeclassification(Level8)equivalenttoasecond-classhonoursdegree,gradetwo,inanappropriatediscipline,fromanapproveduniversityoranapprovedequivalentdegree-awardingbody,orhaveanapprovedequivalentprofessionalqualificationinanareacognatetotheproposedresearchtopic.
SuchcandidatesareconsideredforentryonlyontheresearchMaster'sregisterinitially.

3CandidateswithataughtMaster'sdegree(Level9)inanappropriatedisciplinewithfirst-orsecond-classhonours,andcandidateswithaprimarydegreeinanappropriatedisciplinewithfirst-orsecond-classhonours,gradeone,mayapplyandbeconsideredforentrytothePhD-trackregisterwithaviewtoproceedingtowardsaPhD.
Suchcandidateswillundergoaconfirmationprocedure,asoutlinedinsection8,beforebeingadmittedtothePhDregister.

4StudentsontheMaster'sregistermayapplyfortransfertothePhDregisterunderthesameconditions,andusingthesameprocedure,asPhD-trackcandidatesrequestingconfirmationonthePhDregister.

5CandidatesholdinganappropriateMaster'sdegreeobtainedbyresearchmayapplyfordirectentrytothePhDregistertoconductresearchinacognatearea.

6Inexceptionalcircumstancesonly,candidatesforaMaster'sorProfessionalDoctoratedegreewhodonotmeetthestipulatedentryrequirementsbasedontheircognatedegreebutwhocandemonstrateexceptionalabilityoraptitudeforacademicresearchmayapplytopursuestudiesforaresearchdegree.
Theymaybasetheirapplicationonrecognitionoftheiraccreditedorexperientialpriorlearning,inlinewithUniversitypoliciesinthisregard.
Theadmissionofcandidatesnotholdingapriordegreequalificationcognatetotheareaofresearchbeingundertakenshallbestrictlylimitedandapplicableinexceptionalcasesonly.
SuchapplicationsmustbefullysupportedandendorsedbytheSchoolinwhichtheresearchwillbecarriedoutandsupervised.
TheonuswillbeontheSchoolandthesupervisortogiveclearreasonsfortheirrecommendationinsuchacase,andtheGraduateResearchStudiesBoardwillmakethefinaldecisiononadmission.

7StudentsholdingacademicqualificationsfromoutsidetheStatewillbeassessedusingtheNARICguidelinesandtheEuropeanFrameworkofQualifications.

OnlycandidateswhohavecontactedtheSchoolwithwhichtheywishtoberegistered,andhavegotarecommendationfromtheSchooltoapply,willbeabletoproceedtothecompletionofthePACapplication.
Allsuchcandidatesneedtohavethesupportofapotentialsupervisor.

2SuccessfulcandidateswillberequiredtoregisterwiththeUniversityandpaytheappropriatefeesandseektheirScholarshipContractLetterwhereapplicablefromtheirSchool.

6WheredoctoralorMaster'sresearchistobeconductedinformalcollaborationwithanotherhighereducationinstitution,orundertakeninthecontextoftheenterprisemodel,theDCUPolicyonResearchSupervisionandAwardsinCollaborationwithOtherInstitutionsapplies.
Thecontextshouldbemadeclearatthetimeofthestudent'sapplicationtoDCUsothatanagreementonjointsupervisionorjointawardcanbedrawnupwiththepartnerinstitutionorcompanypriortoregistration.
Significantadvanceplanningisusuallyrequired.

5TheregistrationdateforAutumnregistrationispublishedintheAcademicCalendar.

Studentswhoregisteronorafterthisdatemustre-registerforYear1inthefollowingSeptember.

DEFERRAL/WITHDRAWAL6.
1Itispreferableforstudentstoconducttheirresearchwithoutinterruptioninsofaraspossible.
Occasionally,astudentmayhavereasontobeabsentfromtheUniversity.
Ifthisisforaperiodoflessthanthreemonths,nochangetoregistrationisrequired,andregularfeeliabilityapplies.

2Insomecircumstances,forexampleinthecaseofillness,orfinancialorfamilycircumstances,itispossibletoapplyforaformaltemporarycessationofregistrationuntilthedifficultieshavebeenresolved.
DeferralsshouldnormallybegrantedinkeepingwithDCUMarksandStandards,andonlyinsuchexceptionalcircumstances.
DeferralsmustbeapprovedbytheSupervisorandtherelevantHeadofSchoolandwillusuallybeforahalf,orfullacademicyear.

3StudentswishingtodefermustnotifytheRegistry,inadvanceofthedeferral,inwritingbycompletingandsubmittinganApplicationforDeferral.
Retrospectivedeferralsarenotallowed,exceptinexceptionalcaseswhereastudentwasadverselyaffectedbyillnessorotherfactors,whichhe/shewasunableor,forvalidreasons,unwillingtodivulge,andislimitedtohalfyeardeferral.

4Duringanytemporarycessationofregistration,thestudent'sparticipationintheresearchprogrammeissuspendedandthestudentwillnotbeentitledtosupervisionortousetheUniversityfacilities,includingtheLibrary.

5Theminimumperiodofregistrationisextendedbyaperiodcorrespondingtothedeferredperiod.
ConsistentwithDCUMarksandStandards,themaximumperiodofregistrationisnotextended.

7Whenastudentisexternallyfunded,he/sheshoulddiscussthesituationwiththeSupervisor(s)inthefirstinstance,andthesponsoringagencyshouldbeconsultedifatemporarycessationofstudyisnecessary.
Studentsandsupervisorsshouldbeawareofanypossibleimplicationswhichthistemporarycessationmayhaveonthefundingandofanyadditionalrequirementsstipulatedbythefundingbody.
Studentswhodeferdonotreceiveastipendduringthisperiod,asstipendsarepaidonlyduringactiveregistration.
TheGraduateStudiesOfficeshouldbenotifiedpriortothestudentseekingadeferralfromtheUniversity.

8ResearchstudentswithdrawingfromtheUniversitymustnotifytheRegistry,eitherthroughtheStudentAppsPageorviatherelevantlinkontheRegistrywebpage.

SUPERVISIONOFPROGRAMMESOFRESEARCH7.

Eachgraduateresearchstudentwillhaveasupervisorypanel.
2Theprincipalaimofthesupervisorypanelistoparticipateinformaldecision-makingwithrespecttothestudent'sprogress,andprovideadvice,additionalsupportandpastoralcare,andescalate,asappropriate,shouldproblemsarise.

However,candidatesinrespectofwhomanappealisupheldmaybeawardedfurtheropportunitiestohaveworkconsidered,orsomeotherremedyappliedasappropriate.

5GraduateTrainingElementsAppealsAppealsarisingfromadecisionoftheGTEAwardBoardshouldbesubmittedtotheExaminationAppealsBoardinaccordancewiththeUniversity'sExaminationAppealsprocedures.
AstudentmayappealagainstadecisionoftheGTEAwardBoardonthefollowinggroundsonly:(i)TheexaminationswerenotconductedinaccordancewiththecurrentregulationsasapprovedbyAcademicCouncil.
(ii)Therewasamaterialadministrativeerrororamaterialirregularityinassessmentprocedureswhichhavemadearealandsubstantialdifferencetohis/herresult.
