Final ly successful language learne are learnewith a purpose.Theywant to learn the language because they are interested in thelanguage andthe peoplewhospeakit. It is necessaryfor themtolearnthe language inordertocommunicatewiththese peopleandto learnfrom them.Theyfind iteasyto practice using the languageregularly because theywant to learn with it。

02-A.Taxes Taxes and More Taxes

America often saythat there are onlytwo things a peon can besure of in l ife:death and taxes  America do not have a corneronthe "death"market  but many people feel that the United Statesleads the world with the wot taxes。

Taxescoistof the moneywhich people paytosupport theirgovernment.There are general lythree levels of government in theUnited States: federal  state and city; therefore  there are threetypes of taxes。

Salaried peoplewhoearnmorethan afewthousand dol la mustpay a certain percentage of theirsalaries to the federal government.The percentage varies from peon to peon. It depends on theirsalaries.Thefederal government has a graduated incometax  thatis  the percentage of the tax(14 to 70 percent) increases as apeon's income increases.With the high costof taxes  people arenotvery happyon Apri l 15  when the federal taxes are due。

The second tax is for the state government:NewYork 

Cal ifornia  North Dakota  or any of the other forty-seven states.Some states have an income tax simi lar to thatof the federalgovernment.Of coue  the percentage forthe state tax is lower.Otherstates have a sales tax which is a percentage charged to anyitemwhichyou buyin that state. Forexample a peon mightwantto buy a packet of cigarettes fortwenty-five cents. If there is a salestax of eight percent in thatstate  then the costof the cigarettes istwenty-seven cents.This figure includes the sales tax.Some statesuse incometax in addition to sales taxto raisetheir revenues.Thestate tax laws are divee and confusing。

The third tax is forthe city.This tax comes in two forms:propertytax(people who own a home have to paytaxes on it)and excisetax which ischarged onca in acity.The cities usethesefunds foreducation  pol ice and fire departments  publ icworks andmunicipal bui ldings。

Since America paysuch high taxes  theyoften feel that they areworking one dayeach weekjust to pay theirtaxes.People alwayscomplain about taxes.Theyoften protest that the government usestheir taxdol la inthe wrong way.Theysaythat itspends too much onuseless and impractical programs.AlthoughAmerica have differentviews on many issues  they tend to agree on one subject: taxes aretoo high。

Twothings maketheAtlantic Ocean rather unusual . For so largeanocean it hasveryfew islands.Also it is the world's saltiestocean。

There is so much water in the Atlanticthat it is hard to imaginehow muchthere is.Butsuppose no more rainfel l into it and no morewaterwas brought to it by rive. It would take the ocean about4000yea to dry up.Onthe average the water is a l ittle more thantwomi les (km)deep but inplaces it ismuchdeeper.Thedeepestspotis nearPuerto Rico.This "deep" 30 246feet -almostsix mi les (km)
