IndeedwehavebeenrankedthebestuniversityintheworldbytheTimesHigherEducationGlobalRankingforthepasttwoyears.
Partlyforthisreasonandpartly,Iexpect,becauseofitsplaceinEnglishhistoryforalmost900years,OxfordhascometobeusedasasymbolinvigorousargumentsabouttheUnitedKingdom;debatesaboutthenatureofBritishsociety,aboutclass,opportunity,andequality.
Inthesedebatesemotionoftentrumpsevidence,thefactsareoftenoverlooked.
Thatiswhyitissoimportantthatwesetthefactsoutclearly,whetherornottheyreflectwellonus.
ThisAnnualAdmissionsReport,ourfirst,aimstodojustthat.
TheanswerstomanyofthequestionssooftenaskedofOxfordarecontainedinthepagesthatfollow:HowdiverseistheUniversityHowwelldostudentsfromstateschools,fromtheregionsoftheUK,fromethnicminorities,fromdeprivedbackgrounds,fareintheadmissionsprocessHowdoesauniversitycomposedofsomanydifferentcollegesanddepartmentsbuildacoherentsystemwhichadmitsstudentsfairly,transparently,andbasedonacademicmerit,regardlessofbackgroundAsthisAdmissionsReportmakesclear,Oxfordreflectstheinequalities–socio-economic,ethnicandregional–thatexistinBritishsociety.
Thepicturethatemergesfromthestatisticsisofauniversitywhichischanging;evolvingfastforaninstitutionofitsageandstanding,butperhapstooslowlytomeetpublicexpectations.
Itisapictureofprogressonagreatmanyfronts,butwithworkremainingtobedone.
ThereareaspectsofOxfordwhichthestatisticsalonecannotrevealbutwhichareasimportantasanydata.
ByshowingclearlywhocomestoOxfordasanundergraduatetoday,Ihopethatthisreportwillhelpusfindcommongroundononecentraltenet:itisprofoundlyintheinterestsofthecountry,andofgenerationsofstudentstocome,thatOxfordremainsoneofthetopuniversitiesintheworld–auniversityforexceptional,academicallymotivatedstudentsfromallbackgrounds.
