TheRDisconfiguredoneachandeveryVRFcreatedonthePEnodesandmustbeconfiguredinsuchawaythatnootherVRFonanyotherPEinthebackbonehasthesamevalue.
RDsareencodedaspartoftheNetworkLayerReachabilityInformation(NLRI)intheBGPUpdatemessages.
ThelatterisachievedviatheuseRouteTargets(RT)whichareencodedasMP-BGPextendedcommunities.
RTsareconfiguredonthePEnodes,withintheVRFs,aseitherimportorexportorboth.
RTsconstitutethegluewhichdetermineswhetheracustomerVPN-IPv4routebeingadvertisedbyonePEnodeistobeacceptedbyanotherremotePEnodethusformingalogicalIPVPNendtoend.
TheexportRTisaddedtoVPN-IPv4BGPUpdatesoriginatingfromthePEwhichisadvertisingthosecustomerroutes.

TheuseofRTcanalsobeexploitedtoachieveanumberofdifferentIPVPNtopologies,fromany-to-any(meshed)whereallVRFsinthesameIPVPNhavethesameimportandexportRT,tohub&spoketopologieswherethehubnodesuseoneexportRT(configuredasimportRTonspokes)andadifferentimportRT(configuredasexportRTonthespokes);topologieswithmultiplehubsitescanalsobeeasilyachieved.

ThissecondCircuitlessaddresswillbeusedtoprovideaddressspacefortheouterheaderofIP-in-IPencapsulationforallIPVPNspacketsterminatingtoandoriginatingfromthePE.
ThissecondCircuitlessaddressisthereforeideallyconfiguredasanetworkroute(i.

WhenthissecondCircuitlessIPaddressisconfigureditmustalsobeenabledforIPVPNservices.
WithAvayaIPVPN-Lite,theRDisnowusedtoconveyoneextrapieceofinformationoverandaboveitsintendedusewithintheRFC4364framework.
IntheRFC,theonlypurposeoftheRDistoensurethatidenticalIPv4routesfromdifferentcustomersarerendereduniquesothatBGPcantreatthemasseparateVPN-IPv4routes.
WithIPVPN-Lite,theRDisnowalsousedtoadvertisetoremotePEdeviceswhatIPaddressneedstobeusedastheouterIP-in-IPencapsulationwhenthoseremotePEdevicesneedtodeliveracustomerpacketovertheIPVPNbacktothePEnodewhichownsthedestinationroutetowhichthepacketisaddressed.
ThereforewhenconfiguringRDforIPVPN-LitetheRDmust(a)alwaysbeconfiguredasType1format(IPaddress:number)and(b)theIPaddressconfiguredintheRDmustallocateonehostIPaddressdefinedbythesecondCircuitlessinterfaceforeachVRFonthePE.
Again,theRDmuststillbeconfiguredtoensurethatnootherVRFonanyotherPEhasthesameRD.
InthefollowingexamplethesecondcircuitlessIPinterfaceisconfiguredasaprivateaddress,witha24bitmask,wherethethirdoctetidentifiesthePEnode-idandthefourthoctet(thehostportion)definestheVRFonthatPEnode.
