Thishasledtothedevelopmentofanumberofconceptsandtoolsthatenableorganizationstoevaluateandimprovetheenvironmentalperformanceofproductsystems.
Conceptsandtoolsthatexplicitlyfocusonproductsinclude;designforenvironment,lifecycleassessment,sustainabledesign,greenprocurement,lifecycleengineeringandmorerecentlyintegratedproductpolicy.
Thepurposeofthispaperistoexplorethechallengesofimplementingoneoftheleadingconceptualapproachestoevaluatingandimprovingproductsystems,namelysustainabledesign.
Acomplex,andoftenconfusingsetoffactorsinfluencetheevolutionandintegrationofsustainabledesignanddesignforenvironment(DfE)inorganizations.
Respondingtothesefactorsrequiresanunderstandingandsensitivitytotheorganization'sinternalculture,existingsystems,initiatives,itsmarketandstakeholders(tonameafew).
Unfortunatelytherearefewguidelinesorframeworksforunderstandingthesefactorsanddesigning/implementingsuccessfulsustainabledesignandDfEprograms.
Thegoalofthispaperistodiscussseveraldifferentapproachesthathavebeenusedbyorganizationstodevelopandimplementtheseprograms.
ThepaperwillelaborateuponhowandwhysustainabledesignandDfEhasevolvedwithinthesecompanies.
Theexperiencesoftwoprivatecompaniesandonepublicsectororganizationwillbecapturedthroughacombinationofprimary(interviews)andsecondaryresearchmethodsusingpublishedmaterials.
Thecompaniesexaminedincludethosethatdevelopedentirelynewprograms,whileanothermodifiedanexistingenvironmentalprogram.
Thefindingsindicatethatthereareseveralcommonchallengesfacedbycompaniesintegratingsustainabledesignanddesignforenvironment(DfE)intotheiractivities.
Akeychallengefacedbyeachoftheseorganizationsismanagingtheinternalcomplexities(changemanagement,motivatingstaff,planningetc.
)associatedwithimplementingsuchinitiatives.
Inaddition,thefindingssuggestthesechallengescanbebetterunderstoodandovercomeusingaframeworkthatcanbeadoptedandcustomizedtotheorganization.
Thepaperwillproposeaframeworkanddiscussitinthecontextofthecaseexamples.
