IftheOrganizationfindsthattheenvironmentalorsocialimpactsofanyofitsproposedprojectsarenotlikelytobeadequatelyaddressed,itmaychoosenottoproceedwiththeproject.
UNIDOdoesnotsupportlarge‐scaleinfrastructuredevelopmentinvestmentprojects.
UNIDOassistsitsMemberStateswithtechnicalassistancetypeprojects,whichlargelyprovidecapacitybuilding,trainingandawarenessraising,strategicplanning,policyreform,institutionstrengthening,technologyconversionandrehabilitationservices,aswellaspilotdemonstrationofspecifictechnologies.
Withinthecontextofitsoperations,UNIDOcommitstofullcompliancewiththeGEFsafeguardstandards,whicharereflectedinUNIDOESSPPasthefollowingOperationalSafeguards(OSs):OS1:EnvironmentalandSocialAssessmentOS1isanoverarchingsafeguardprovidingtheframeworkfortherequiredenvironmentalandsocialscreeningandassessmentsthatallUNIDOprojectsshouldundergo.
ThisOSalsodetermineswhetherproposedprojectscouldpotentiallyinvolveactivitiesorcomponentsthatposeanyspecificriskscoveredbyOSs2‐7andwhetheranyoftheseOSsneedstobetriggered.
OS2:ProtectionofNaturalHabitatsTheoverarchingobjectiveofthissafeguardistoconservebiologicaldiversityandpromotethesustainableuseofnaturalresources.
UNIDOdoesnotengageinanyprojectsdealingwithcriticalhabitats.
UNIDOusesaprecautionaryandecosystemapproachtonaturalresourceconservationandmanagementtoensureopportunitiesforenvironmentallysustainabledevelopment.
Thesafeguardreflectstheimportanceofbiodiversityandthevalueofkeyecosystemstothepopulation,emphasizingtheneedtorespect,conserveandmaintaintheknowledge,innovationsandpracticesofindigenousandlocalcommunities,andtoprotectandencouragecustomaryuseofbiologicalresourcesinaccordancewithtraditionalculturalpracticesthatarecompatiblewithconservationorsustainableuserequirements.
OS3:InvoluntaryResettlementTheobjectiveofthisOSistoensurethatprojectsthatcouldresultininvoluntaryresettlementareeitherre‐designedorarenotapprovedforfurtherdevelopmentbyUNIDO.
OS4:IndigenousPeopleWithOS4,UNIDOensuresthat,consistentwiththerightsandresponsibilitiessetforthintheUNDeclarationontheRightsofIndigenousPeoplesandotherinternationallawrelatingtoindigenouspeoples2projectsaredesignedandimplementedinsuchawaythatfostersfullrespectforindigenouspeopleandtheirdignity,humanrights,andculturaluniquenesssothatthey(a)receiveculturallyappropriatesocialandeconomicbenefits;and(b)donotsufferadverseeffectsduringthedevelopmentprocess.
OS5:PestManagementWithOS5,UNIDOensuresthatinanyprojectapplyingorpromotingtheuseofpesticides,theenvironmentalandhealthrisksassociatedwithpesticideuseareminimizedandmanaged,andthatsafe,effective,andenvironmentallysoundpestmanagementispromotedandsupported.
UNIDOdoesnotsupporttheuseofpesticides,productsand2IncludingtheInternationalLaborOrganizationConvention169onIndigenousandTribalPeoples(1989);UnitedNationsDeclarationontheRightsofIndigenousPeoples(2007);UNDGGuidelinesonIndigenousPeoples'Issues(2008);UnitedNationsPermanentForumonIndigenousIssues(undertheEconomicandSocialAffairsDepartment),Inter-AgencySupportGrouponIndigenousIssues,andUnitedNationsInternationalDecadeoftheWorld'sIndigenousPeoplesPlanofAction.

UNIDOrecognizestheimportanceoftheinternationalmovetowardsgreateruseofstrongandeffectivecountry‐levelenvironmentalandsocialsafeguardsystems.
