comCOURSEDESCRIPTION&OVERVIEWThiscourseexaminesmajorconcepts,theories,andresearchperspectiveswithinthefieldofcultureandhumancommunication.
Itwillintroduceandreviewkeyapproachestothestudyofhumaninteraction,rhetoric,language,persuasion,andculturalprocessesacrossdiversecontexts.
Asastudentofthisclass,youwillexploreitsinterdisciplinarycharacter,examiningtheroleoflanguageandmeaning;howlanguagestructuresreality;thenonverbalaspectsofsocialinteraction;andtheprocessesandmeaningsofinteractioninvariedcontexts,suchasinterpersonal,smallgroups,andorganizations.
Specifically,thecourseprovidesaframeworkfromwhichyoucanthinkseriouslyabouthowcultureandsocietyareconstructedinourcommunicativepractices.
Wewillexaminethesocial,cultural,andpoliticalimpactsofcommunicationasitunfoldsineverydaylife.
Bysemester'send,youwilldevelopthecriticaltoolstoconsidertheprocessandroleofcommunicationincontemporarysocietyandbegintoestablishyourownperspectivesonthestudyofhumancommunication.
COURSEFORMAT,GENERALREQUIREMENTS,&ATTENDANCEIwillbegineachclasswithashortintroductorylecturethatexaminesthethemesandreadingsfortheweek.
Therestoftheclassshouldfunctiontopromoteclassdiscussionandstudent-ledconversationaboutthevariousreadings.
Becauseactiveparticipationindiscussionisthecornerstoneoftheclass,youshouldcomepreparedfordiscussionandwithcopiesofthereading.
Toaidourdiscussionandtoimproveyourwritingskills,youwillberequiredtoturnineightBlackboardpostswhereyouwill(1)provideabrief,oneparagraphsummaryoftheargumentofeachreading(2)poseatleastoneconceptualquestionaboutthereadingsand/ortopicsunderdiscussion.
FourofthemmustbepostedbeforeclassonOctober22.
Inaddition,therewillbeanin-classmid-termconsistingofmultiplechoiceandtrue/falsequestionsaswellasatake-homefinalexam.
Youwillalsohavetwoshortwritingassignmentsduringthecourseoftheclass.
