IntroductionOfcom'sAdults'MediaLivesstudywassetupin2005toprovideasmall-scale,richanddetailedqualitativecomplementtoOfcom'squantitativesurveysofmedialiteracy.
Whereasthesurveysseektoquantifyinastatisticallyrobustwaydierentlevelsofmediaaccess,awareness,skillsandunderstanding,Adults'MediaLivesaimstoprovideahumanfacetothedata.
This15-yearethnographicvideostudyhastrackedthechangingnatureofindividuals'relationshipswithdigitalmedia–howitfitsintotheirlives,whatmotivatesthemtoadoptnewtechnologyandlearnnewskills,theirusagehabits,levelsofunderstanding,issuesandconcernsaboutmedia.
Weconductextendedin-homeface-to-faceinterviewswiththe19participantseachOctober.
Giventhecurrentextraordinarycircumstances,Ofcomaskedustore-contactsomeoftheparticipantstodiscusshowthelockdownisaectingthem,howtheirmediabehaviourhaschangedandhowtheyarestayinginformedatthisdiiculttime.
Werecordedatotaloftenc.
15-minutevideointerviewsusingtheZoomonlinevideoconferencingplatform.
TheinterviewswereconductedbyMarkEllisandTonyHarbronintheearlypartofthelockdownperiod,between30thMarchand6thApril2020.
Thiswasthesecondweekofthelockdown,whichhadbeenimposedbytheUKgovernmenton23rdMarch.
(Atthetimeofinterviewing,thelockdownhadbeensetforaminimumofthreeweeks,tobereviewedon16thApril.
)Thesamplerepresentedabroadcrosssectionofindividualsaged20-75acrossEngland,ScotlandandWales,aectedindierentwaysbythelockdown.
Onekeyworker(arailwayengineer),whosewifeworksfortheNHSandwhosechildrenhadbeensenthomefromschool;Twoprimarilyhome-basedworkers(atutorandacharityfundraisingmanager)whowereoperatinglargelyasnormal,albeitwithothersathome;Astudentwhohadbeensenthomefromuniversityandwhowascombiningstudyingathomewithworkingpart-timestackingshelvesinalocalsupermarket;Abarmanagerwhohadbeenfurloughed;Atraineesolicitorwhohadswitchedtohomeworking;Tworetiredpeoplewhowereself-isolating;Twopeople(aged46and58)withunderlyinghealthconditions,whowerealsoself-isolating.

Therehadbeenagrowthintheclaimeduseofsocialmedia,particularlyforactivitiessuchasstreaminglivecontentandparticipatinginchallenges.
Almostallparticipantsreportedamuch-increaseduseofvideochatappssuchasFaceTimeandZoomforkeepingintouchwithfamilyandfriends,andforparticipatinginsocialevents.

Examplesincludeinteractionwitheducationalinstitutions,healthcare,jobhunting,shopping,gambling,bankingand,ofcourse,keepingintouchwithfamilyandfriends.
Duringthisearly-lockdownperiod,participantsfeltthattheinternetwasmoreimportantthanever,andthemore'connected'aparticipant'slifestylealreadywas,themoreeasilytheywereabletoadapttothelockdown.
Forexample,thosewhoalreadyworkedmostlyfromhomewerewell-equippedforthelockdownandfacedminimaldisruption.
Existingonlineuniversityandschoolresourcesalsoallowedstudytocontinuerelativelyseamlessly.
