TheremaybenobetterexampleofthisthanPreview,whichhasbeenbuiltintomacOSfromthebegin-ning.
TocallattentiontoallthethingsPreviewcando,wepublishedthe"PowerofPreview"seriesofarticlesinTidBITSinearly2016.

11(Re)AcquaintYourselfwithPreviewYou'veprobablyusedPreviewmanythousandsoftimesovertheyears,butwewanttokickoffthebookwithafewsetupandconfigurationre-minderssoeveryoneisonthesamevirtualpage.
Previewisdesignedtoworkwithbothgraphicalimages(incommonformatslikeJPEG,PNG,GIF,andTIFF)andPDFdocuments,theAdobe-createdPortableDocumentFormatthat'subiquitousonthein-ternetforelectronicversionsofpaperdocuments.
Onthefaceofthings,imagesandPDFsarefairlysimilar,andyoucandomanyofthesamethingswiththeminPreview.
However,therearesituationswherethesametoolsinPreviewworksomewhatdifferentlydependingonwhetheryou'remanipulatinganimageoraPDF.
TheresultisthatPreviewissomethingofachimeraintheMacworld—mostappswithsimilarfeaturesfocuseitheronimagesorPDFs,notboth.
Forthemostpart,we'lldiscussthegraphic-andPDF-relatedfea-turesseparately.
Thischapterstartswithalookatafewconfigurationdetails,andcon-tinueswithalookattheinterfaceinTourandCustomizetheMainToolbarandTourtheMarkupToolbar.

Whywouldyoucon-vertformatsHereareafewgoodreasons:Youneedtoopenanimageinaparticularapp,butthatappdoesn'tsupporttheimage'scurrentformat.
Theoriginalimageisinaformatunfriendlytowebbrowsers,likeTIFF,andyouneedtouseitontheweb.
Theimageisn'tintheidealformat,likealargelyphotographicim-ageinPNGthat'smuchlargerthanitwouldbeinJPEG.
ExportingtoOtherFileFormatsAfewcommandsinPreview'sFilemenuhelpyouexportyourfilestodifferentfileformats:Export:Withthiscommand,youcansaveacopyofyourfilewithadifferentname,inadifferentlocation,andinadifferentformat,includingHEIC,JPEG,JPEG-2000,OpenEXR,PDF,PNG,andTIFF.
