HethenadvisedhisNSAsupervisorthatheneededtobeawayfromworkfor"acoupleofweeks"inordertoreceivetreatmentforepilepsy,aconditionhelearnedhesuffersfromafteraseriesofseizureslastyear.
Ashepackedhisbags,hetoldhisgirlfriendthathehadtobeawayforafewweeks,thoughhesaidhewasvagueaboutthereason.
"Thatisnotanuncommonoccurrenceforsomeonewhohasspentthelastdecadeworkingintheintelligenceworld.
"OnMay20,heboardedaflighttoHongKong,wherehehasremainedeversince.
Hechosethecitybecause"theyhaveaspiritedcommitmenttofreespeechandtherightofpoliticaldissent",andbecausehebelievedthatitwasoneofthefewplacesintheworldthatbothcouldandwouldresistthedictatesoftheUSgovernment.

Sincethedisclosuresbegantoemerge,hehaswatchedtelevisionandmonitoredtheinternet,hearingallthethreatsandvowsofprosecutionemanatingfromWashington.
Andheknowsonlytoowellthesophisticatedtechnologyavailabletothemandhoweasyitwillbeforthemtofindhim.
TheNSApoliceandotherlawenforcementofficershavetwicevisitedhishomeinHawaiiandalreadycontactedhisgirlfriend,thoughhebelievesthatmayhavebeenpromptedbyhisabsencefromwork,andnotbecauseofsuspicionsofanyconnectiontotheleaks.
"Allmyoptionsarebad,"hesaid.
TheUScouldbeginextraditionproceedingsagainsthim,apotentiallyproblematic,lengthyandunpredictablecourseforWashington.
OrtheChinesegovernmentmightwhiskhimawayforquestioning,viewinghimasausefulsourceofinformation.

Hisresponsibilityformaintainingcomputernetworksecuritymeanthehadclearancetoaccessawidearrayofclassifieddocuments.
Thataccess,alongwiththealmostthreeyearshespentaroundCIAofficers,ledhimtobeginseriouslyquestioningtherightnessofwhathesaw.
HedescribedasformativeanincidentinwhichheclaimedCIAoperativeswereattemptingtorecruitaSwissbankertoobtainsecretbankinginformation.
Snowdensaidtheyachievedthisbypurposelygettingthebankerdrunkandencouraginghimtodrivehomeinhiscar.
Whenthebankerwasarrestedfordrunkdriving,theundercoveragentseekingtobefriendhimofferedtohelp,andabondwasformedthatledtosuccessfulrecruitment.
