C-ITSsystemshavetoguaranteecommunicationsecurity,especiallyinheterogeneousnetworkenvironments.
Safetycriticalapplicationsrequireauthenticationtoavoidattackerstosendspoofedorreforgedinformation,nevertheless,carsanddriversprivacymustbemaintained.
Inordertoenhancecooperativeawareness,ITSexchangerelevantinformationabouttheirspeed,heading,position,etc.

Emergencymessages(DecentralizedEnvironmentalNotificationMessages(DENM))andbeaconingmessages(CooperativeAwarenessMessages(CAM))willbeusedbyITStounderstandtheirenvironment.

TheITScanperformseveralkindofverificationofdifferentcomplexity,varyingfromsimplechecksofthereceivedspeedorpositiontobeunderacertainthresholdorwithinacertainrangetomorecomplexchecksasforexampleneighborhoodsspeedscomparisonorverifyreceivedinformationwithitssensors.
OnceananomalyisdetectedtheITScantakesomecountermeasures(e.

discardfurthermessagesreceivedfromthatITS)andsendamisbehaviorreporttothecentralMisbehaviorAuthority(MA).

Forprivacyreasonsallsafetymessagesaresignedusingpseudonymidentities,sobothreporterandreportedITSareidentifiedbytheirpseudonym.

Atanhigherlevel,theMAcancross-checkreportsondifferentpseudonymslinkedtothesameidentity,andatanotherleveltheMAcancrossdatafromdifferentreportsondifferentITS.
Thosethreestrategies(device-based,event-basedandfeature-based)canbeusefultoidentifydifferentscenariosasfaultydevices,maliciousdevicesandcoordinatedattacks.
Themisbehaviordetectionarisesseveralprivacyissues:tosendthemisbehaviorreportcanbethreateningforboththereporterandthereportedITS.
Moreover,themisbehaviorauthorityneedsameanstolinkpseudonymidentities(oranothermechanism)forbothinvestigationandrevocationpurposes.
