First,itallowsengineerstobecomefamiliarwiththeWheatstonehardwareandtheWheatNet-IParchitecturewhileworkingonanon-criticalfacility(productionroom).
Then,assumingthatatleastsomeoftheproductionroomNexgencomputerswillbereplacedwithnewcomputers,itfreesuponeormorereplacedNexGencomputersforconversionasaudioserver(ASERV)machines(seetheSectionIIIformoreinformationonASERVconversion).
ConversionofASERVmachinesisnextintheorder.
Whilearguablyamorecriticalcomponent,ASERVsaredonenextbecausethisleavesthestill-unconvertedCTRLworkstationsavailableforEmergencyControlRoom(ECR)operationwhiletheASERVsarebeingconverted.
ASERVconversionisfairlystraightforwardbutwithafewadditionalsteps,dependingontheindividualsituation.
TheUtilityMixerineachASERVbladeisusedforswitchingfunctionsthatwereformerlyhandledbyanexternalswitch(BroadcastToolsorSineSystems).
Insatelliteoperations,"relays"fromthesatelliteprogramareroutedthroughtheASERVbladeinsoftwaretoNexgenwheretheytriggereventsjustas"optos"didintheanalogworld.
3CTRLworkstationsareconvertedlast.
Theseareprobablythesimplestconversions,buttypicallytheyarealsothoseforwhichtherewillbethegreatesttimepressure(sincetheyarelocatedinorusedbycontrolroomsthatareontheair).
Withtheexperiencegainedinthefirsttwophasesofconversion,inmostcaseseachCTRLworkstationconversioncantakeplaceinlessthananhour.
Priortobeginninganypartoftheconversion,itisadvisabletomakeupthecablesthatwillconnectthebladesand"PCBlades"(whatWheatNet-IPcallsitssoftwaredriversinNexgenworkstations)totheWheatNet-IPnetwork,andthecablesthatwillconnectthebladestoAESandanalogaudiosourcesanddestinations.
CAT6EthernetcableisrequiredfortheWheatNet-IPnetwork,andthecompanystandardistouseorange-jacketedcable,eitherriserorplenumgradeasappropriatefortherun.
BladesuseRJ-45connectors,andthesimplestwaytomakeconnectingcablesistouseriser-gradeCAT5cable,crimpinganRJ-45connectorononeendandsolderingXLRmaleorfemaleconnectorsontheotherendofeachshort(sixinchesorless)"pigtail.
"ForAESsignals,onlypair1(white/orange)isused.
Foranalog,otherpairsareused–consulttheWheatNet-IPmanualforthecorrectpinoutfortheparticularsituation.
Installself-laminatingwirelabelsonbothendsofeachcable(includingCAT6WheatNet-IPEthernetcables)asitismadesothattherewillbenomistakeastowherethecableconnects.
Theideaistocreateasituationwheretheexistingcablesconnectingtothebreak-outboxorcablefromtheoldNexGensoundcardscanbeunpluggedfromthoseandpluggedintothenewbladepigtailsinahurry.
Thefollowingsectionswilltakeyouthroughthevariousfacetsoftheconversionprocessindetail.
II.
ProductionRoomConversionProductionroomconversionentailsremovingtheexistingmixerandreplacingitwiththecombinationofcontrolsurface/powersupply,mixengineandconsoleblade.
WepresumeherethatyoualreadyhaveaWindows7computerinplaceastheNexgenproductionworkstation.
Ifanewcomputerisbeinginstalledforthispurpose,followtheinstructionsinSectionsIVandV.
TheE-6controlsurfacerequiresanexternalVGAmonitor.
Pickupa19-inchLCDbeforeyoubegintheconversion.
Inmostcases,allaudiocablesandconnectionscanberemoved.
Nexgenwillneednoaudioconnectionswhatsoever.
Theonlyaudioconnections/cablesthatwillbeneededare:4·Existingmicrophonecablesandinterconnectionsbetweenmicrophoneandexternalmicpreamp/processor(ifnomicprocessorisused,theinternalmicpreampintheconsolebladecanbeused).
·Monitoramplifieroramplifiedspeakercables\·CDplayer/recorder(ifused)·MDplayer/recorder(ifused)·Externaleffectsdevices(ifused)Itisrecommendedthatyoumakenewaudiocablesforthesedevices.
Theconsolebladeprovidesthefollowingconnections:Thetwomicconnectionsontheleftarepreamplifierinputs.
PreampoutputsareprovidedontheRJ-45onthetoprowtotheimmediaterightofthemic2preampinputXLR.
Thepinoutisshownattheright.
Thismustbeconnectedtoananaloginput,usually#1whichistotheimmediaterightofthepreampoutputRJ-45.
ThiscanbedonewithashortRJ-45jumper.
Theleftandrightchannelsofanaloginput#1arethenconfiguredinWheatNet-IPnavigatorforthebladetobeindividualmonochannelswiththenames"Mic1"and"Mic2.
"Theremainingdigitalinputsandoutputscanbeconnectedtolocalsourcesanddestinationsasnotedabove.
NotethattheanalogandAESoutputsareinparallel.
AnalogandAESinputandoutputwiringisasfollows:Dedicatedoutputsareprovidedforcontrolroomandstudio(monitor)aswellasheadphoneandcue.
Notethatyouwillneedtomakeacablefromtheheadphoneoutput(1/4"TRS)totheD9femaleconnectorontherearoftheE6controlsurfacetofeedtheheadphonejackonthesurface.
Alternatively,ajackmountedelsewhere(rackpanelorcabinettabletop)canbeconnectedtothesejacks.
FollowtheinstructionsinSectionsIVandVtoinstallNexgenandtheWheatNet-IPdriverontheNexgenworkstationintheproductionroom.
UsetheWheatNet-IPNavigatorsoftware,discussedinSectionV,to5name,configureandroutetheNexgeninputsandoutputsfortheproductionroom.
UsethenamingconventionsintheExcelworkbookthatwasprovidedtoyouwithyourspecificconfiguration.
ConsulttheWheatNet-IPManualforfurtherinstructionsonoperatingthecontrolsurfaceandconsoleblade.
Animportantnote:theE-6controlsurfaceshouldbepairedwiththemixenginebladeineachstudio,notwiththeconsoleblade.
Thisisabitcounterintuitive.
ThesystemdisplayinWheatNet-IPNavigatorshouldlooksimilartothescreenshotattherightforeachproductionroom.
Notethattheconsoleblade(designatedProdA-Chere)showsasurfacewithaquestionmark(indicatingamissingsurface)andnoIPaddress,Thisiscorrect.
Notethatnamingconventions,whichagainwereprovidedtoyouintheExcelworkbook,areProdA-Eformixengine,ProdA-CfortheconsolebladeandProdA-PCforthePCblade(WheatNet-IPdriverintheNexgenworkstation).
III.
ComputerUpgradeInstructionsWehavefoundthroughexperimentationthattheHPXW4300workstationswithPentium4processorsdohavesufficientresourcestoworkasNexgenaudioservers.
Assuch,weplantoupgradeexistingXW4300sforuseinthiscapacity.
TherearesomethingsthatneedtobereplacedonanyoftheXW4300sthatwearegoingtoreuse:theharddrive,theRAM,andifusingaKVM,thevideocard.
AsecondNICwillneedtobeinstalledforWheatnetanditneedstobeagigabitcard.
Inmostapplicationswerecommenda500GBharddrive,butitalldependsonhowmuchyouhavestoredonyourcomputers.
Typically,audioserverswillhaveverylittleinthewayofstoredmaterial.
Youwillneedatotalof4GBRAMforeachcomputer.
Asforthevideocard,wehadissuesinDenverwiththeoldvideocardsnotlikingtheKVMconnections.
EvidentlysomeKVMsdonotreportbackthedisplayresolutionofthemonitor,soWindows7wouldcontinually(everycoupleofminutes)changethedisplayresolution.
Thiswasveryirritatingandmadeitalmostimpossibletowork,sowerecommendnewvideocardsifusingaKVM.
Becausethermalcompoundwilloftendryoutandloseitseffectiveness,wealsorecommendremovingtheprocessorfanorcooler,cleaningoffanyremainingthermalcompoundfromthemicroprocessorandcoolerandreapplyingathinlayerofnewcompoundbeforereinstallingthecooler.
YouwillneedtoinstallanewlicenseforWindows7(32bit).
OncethemachinecomesupwiththenewW7-32operatingsystem,installLANdriversasnecessaryanddoalltherequiredWindowsupdates(ontheStartmenutypeWindowsUpdateintheboxandclickonthelinkthatcomesup).
Thiswilltakeawhile,usuallyafewhours.

SincesomeofourcomputersareusedtodownloadshowsviaFTP,ImakesureIhaveanFTPclientinstalled.
IalsoinstallAdobeReaderandFlashPlayer.
Youcannotforgettouseanantivirusprogramaswell.
IhighlyrecommendESETNodAntiVirus32.
Althoughifyou'vealreadysignedupforanotherprogram,usethat.
Youcanalsochangeyourcomputer'sworkgroupifthatissomethingyourmarketuses.
Veryimportant:setthecomputernametowhateveritwillpermanentlybe(ASERV1,ASERV2,etc.
).
ThisnameisusedalongwiththeMACaddressoftheNICintheWheatnet-IPaudiodriverlicensekeyandifyouchangethecomputernameafterthisdriverlicensekeyisinstalled,itwillstopworkingandyouwillhavetoobtainandinstallanotherlicensekey.

First,inControlPanel,gotoNetworkandSharingCenter,ChangeAdaptorSettings,thenclickAdvancedandAdvancedSettings.

ThiswilltypicallybethecomputerthatyouuseforX-Point(fortheTDMBridgeRoutersystem).
ThiscomputerwillneedtwoNICs–theexistingNICthatcommunicateswiththeBridgeRouterandtherestofthatclassAnetworkandanewgigabitNICforcommunicationwiththeWheatNet-IPclassCnetwork.

WheatNet-IPNavigatorcanbeinstalledandpasswordprotectedonanycomputerontheWheatnet-IPnetwork,butcarefulthoughtshouldbegiventodoingthatonanymachineinusebynon-engineeringpersonnel.
