These5"holesarepositionedforthetie-downanchorpointsontheF-150whicharenearthefourcornersofthebed,downclosetothelevelofthebedfloor.
Theyallowyourratchetstrapstopassthrutherampsectionswhiletherampsarestowedinthetruckalongsidethebike.
Theyalsoensurethattherampsectionscan'tberemoveduntilthemotorcycleisunstrappedforunloading.

Youdefinitelywanttoapplyanon-skidsurfacetotheramp.
Ipaintedtherampswithonecoatofurethanegaragefloorpaintand,whilethepaintwasstillwet,sprinkledsand(justregularsandlikeyouwoulduseforachild'ssandbox)overthewetpaint.
Afteritdried,Isweptofftheexcesssandandappliedanothercoatofurethaneoverit.
Theresultingsand-finishsurfaceisjustaboutperfectwithplentyofgripevenwhenwet.
ThefirsttimeIloadedandunloadedwithmynewrampwasinadrivingrain–anotherstory–andthetiresdidn'tslipatall.
RAMPASSEMBLY/DISASSEMBLYTIPSFlipbothhalvesoftherampupsidedownwiththeinsidelongedgesfacingeachother.
Thesearethe2"x4"supportrailswiththetwo"holesinthem.
Youmaywanttoproptherampsectionslevelwitha4"(ortwo2")pieceofwoodunderneathsotheclinchholeslineupnice.

Whenyouhavethetworampsectionsboltedtightlytogether,fliptheassembledrampontoitslongedgewiththetailgatehornsfacingthetailgate.
Snagonetailgatehornontotheedgeofthetailgatethengoaroundtotheothersideoftherampandpositiontherampsotheothertailgatehornsarerestingonthetailgate.
Pulltherampsnugupagainsttheedgeofthetailgate.
Ofcourse,thispartofthejobiseasierwithahelperbutalsoeasilydonebyoneman.

Itmakesabigdifferencetofindagoodspottodoyourloadorunload.
Parkwiththerearwheelsofthetruckslightlylowerthanthefrontwheels(likeinashallowditch).
Thislevelstheplanebetweentherampandthetruckbed.
Also,whenyouareloading,trytofindaspotthatisslightlydownhillsoyoucaneasethebikeintothebed.
True,youcandoitfromaflatparkinglotbutyouwillhavetogiveitalittlemoregastorunthebikeuptherampandtherewillbemoreofahumpatthepointwheretherampattachestothetailgate.
Afewinchesofelevationcanmakeabigdifferenceinyoureaseofloading/unloading.

Whenunloading,stilltrytohaveyourrearwheelslowerthanthefront(foramoreflatramp-to-truckbedplane)buttrytohavethefrontofthetruckparkedslightlyuphill.
Thisletsyoueasethebikebackwardsbytheforceofgravitysoyou'renotpullingitwithyourlegs.
Ifyoudoitright,youcaneasethebikein(downhill)andeasethebikeout(uphill).
It'simportanttounderstandthatwhenyoubackthebikeoutanddowntheramp,usingyourrearbrakeisessentiallyoutofthequestion(youneedbothlegstostabilizethebike)andyourfrontbrakeisprettyworthlesssincemostoftheweightwillbeontherearofthebike.
Whatyoudotocontrolyourdescentistousekeepthebikein1stgearanduseyourclutchasa"rearbrake"toslowit.
Actually,Iuseboththeclutchandfrontbrake.
Takeitslowandeasy,youdon'twant700lbsofmotorcyclegettingjiggysomewhereabovegroundlevel.
WITHTHEBIKEINTHETRUCKAfteryouhaveloadedthemotorcycleinthetruckbed,disassembletheramp(justtakesacoupleminutes)andslidethetworampsectionsintothetruckbedalongsidethebikewiththetailgatehornspointingtowardtherearsotheydon'tscratchupyourtruck.
Someguysliketocompressthebike'ssuspension(bysittingonit)thentiethebikedownhardwithratchetstraps.
Othersliketoletthebikesuspensionworkfreelybytyingthebikedownattheswingarmandlowerfrontfork,forabetterrideinthetruck.
Forme,Ipullthebikeinagainstthefrontendofthebedthensecureitwithtwostrapsthroughthewheelsand/orlowersuspension.
Thiskeepsthebikepulledforwardanddown,secureinthetruck.
Ithenusetwomoreratchetstrapswrappedaroundthesteeringheadpartoftheframetokeepthebikestraightupright.
WhenI'mfinished,thebikeisuprightwiththefrontwheelpointedstraightandthekickstanddown(juuuustincaseyougethastyunstrappingit,itwon'tfallover,hopefully.

Ifyourbikerestsonthetailgate,youmightwanttoconsidereitherfirstputtingasheetofplywoodinthebed,extendingouttotheendofthetailgate,orbolsteringthetailgatesothattheweightofthemotorcycledoesnotoverloadtheabilityofyourtailgateretainercables.
Youdon'twantthetailgatetodropoutfromundertherearwheelwhenyouhitthatfirstbigdipintheroad.
Makesurethatwhenyouarefinishedandreadytogotheweightofthebikeisproperlycarriedbythetruckbedandnotthetailgate.
Insummary,thisworkedoutwell.
Itcostlessthan$50,tookanafternoontobuild,isfairlylightweight,sturdyandcanbeeasilyhandledbyoneordinarysizedman.
Loadingandunloadingthebikeisalsoaonemanjob,especiallyifyoutakemyadviceaboutpositioningthetruckforthepropernose-upornose-downattitude.
I'msurethiscanbeimprovedonandcertainlycustomizedtoyourparticulartruck.
Itcouldprobablyalsobeusedonatrailerand/orforloadingfurniture,appliances,etc.
