Mu'inuddinChishtiisacknowledgedthroughouttheIndo-PakistansubcontinentasthesupremefigureamongtheSufisaintsandmastersofthatareaoftheworld.
ChishtiispopularlyknownasGharib-nawaz–theProtectorofthepoor.
HeisalsocalledSultan-e-Hind–theEmperorofIndia.
Detailsofhislifeareobscuredbylegend,butheisbelievedtohavecometoIndiafromCentralAsiaaftermanyyearsoftravellingintheMiddleEast.
TheChishtiSufiorder,fromwhichhetookhisname,wasthenbasedinthetownofChishtinAfghanistanduringthetwelfthcentury.
HisMasterwasUthmanal-Haruni(alsoknownasUsmanHarwani),aQutub,whobestoweduponhimGod-Realizationandperfectedhimafteralongperiodofservitudeandausterities.
ChishticametoIndiaviaLahoreandlivedinDelhi,andthenproceededtotheRajasthancityofAjmershortlybeforetheyear1200,aboutthesametimewhenthelastRajputrulersofDelhifellbeforetheinvadingarmiesoftheMuslimTurks.
SomestoriesclaimChishtienteredIndiabeforetheMuslimarmiesinvaded,andheencounteredhostilityandoppositionfromthelocalBrahminauthorities.
Hishighstatuswasdemonstratedina"battleofmiraculouspowers"with,andconquestover,areveredyogiinDelhi,andthushumbledtheHinduoppositiontohim.
Legendsalsodescribehimbattlingtantricmagicianswhoopposedhim.
OtherstoriesclaimthathearrivedinIndiaaftertheTurkishconquestandlivedaloofandinquietudewithhisdisciplesinthemountainousregionofAjmer,wherehediedin1236.
OneofhischiefdiscipleswasQutubuldinBhaktiyarKaki,whosereveredtombisneartheQutubMinarinDelhi.
LittleisknownofChishti'sspiritualgnosis,becausehedidnotwrite,andthePersianbooksandpoetryascribedtohimaresuspectofnotbeingauthentic.
Forhundredsofyears,histombandshrineinAjmerhasbeenthecenterofanelaborateannualpilgrimageattendedbythousandsofpilgrims,bothHinduandMuslim,manystillexperiencingmiraclesthere.
Mostsignificantly,ChishtibroughtSufismintoIndiaandmergeditsteachingswithVedant.
SimilartoMaulanaRumi,ChishtiisknownforhistraditionofsinginganddancinginSufism,whichwasconsideredtheninIndiatobeillegalorblasphemousbeforehim.
ThenatureofalltheChishtiMasterswastoremainalooffromkingsandpolitics.
Mostimportantly,theseMastersemphasizedecstaticloveforGodasthewaytoapproachHim,theDivineBeloved–notausterity,notdiscipline,notprayer,notpenance,notscholarship,notservice.
Ecstaticlovewastheirwayandtheirpath.
Chishti'sspirituallineageofperfectionistraceablewithoutagaptotheProphetMuhammadhimselfthroughAli,andChishtibroughtwithhimtoIndiatherobe,staffandbowloftheProphetwhichweregivenbyMuhammadtoAli.
Theserelicsdisappeared.
TheywerethepropertyofChishti'sSufipredecessorswhodidnotrevealtheexactwhereaboutsoftheirpossessionofthesesacredartifacts.
FromChishticomesthelineofQutubs–PerfectMasters–thatextendsdowntoSaiBabaofShirdi:QutubuldinBhaktiyarKakiwhowastheMasterofBabaFariduddinGanj-ShakkarwhobecametheMasterofNizam-ul-dinAwliyaofDelhi,whowasMasterfirstofZarzariBakhshwholedthecaravanofonethousandfourhundredsaintsfromDelhitoKhuldabad;andofNizam-ul-dinAwliyawhowassecondlysucceededbyhisbrother,namedBurhag-ul-dinMeherBabawastheLineageDescendantofKhwajaMoinuddinChistithr.

Inotherwords,SaiBaba'sMasterwasZarzariBakhsh;therefore,throughSaiBaba,MeherBabahasaspirituallinkwithMu'inuddinChishti;andthus,throughChishti,MeherBabahasaspirituallinkwiththeProphetofthepreviousAdvent,Muhammadhimself.
