AbstractAGNsandalmostallmassivegalaxiesarebelievedtoharborsupermassiveblackholesatcentre.
Thepresenceofasupermassiveblackholebinary(SMBHB)atthecenterofagalaxyisthesmokinggunthatthegalaxyhasmergedwithanother,eachwithitscentralblackhole.
Measurementsofthistypecanprovideuswithastatisticalmeasureofhowmanygalaxiesaretheresultsofamerger,andthushelptounderstandtheevolutionoftheuniverse.
Inaddition,SMBHBsaredestinedtomergeinaburstofstronggravitationalwaveradiations:thosethatstilleludedetectionandforwhichscientistsarebuildingmoreandmoresensitivetelescopes.
AcoupleofSMBHBshavebeendirectlydetectedandafewobservationalevidencesfortheirexistencesinAGNsarepresent.
However,mostSMBHBsmayformatgas-poorgalacticnucleibutareverychallengingtodiscoverthem.
