WhatkindsofphonesarethesubjectofthisupdateTheterm"wirelessphone"refersheretohandheldwirelessphoneswithbuilt-inantennas,oftencalled"cell","mobile",or"PCS"phones.
ThesetypesofwirelessphonescanexposetheusertomeasurableRadioFrequency(RF)energybecauseoftheshortdistancebetweenthephoneandtheuser'shead.
TheseRFexposuresarelimitedbyFCCsafetyguidelinesthatweredevelopedwiththeadviceoftheFDAandotherfederalhealthandsafetyagencies.
Whenthephoneislocatedatgreaterdistancesfromtheuser,theexposuretoRFisdrasticallylowerbecauseaperson'sRFexposuredecreasesrapidlywithincreasingdistancefromthesource.
Theso-called"cordlessphones,"whichhaveabaseunitconnectedtothetelephonewiringinahouse,typicallyoperateatfarlowerpowerlevels,andthusproduceRFexposuresfarbelowtheFCCsafetylimits.
