Everyeventwasfabulousbuttherehavebeenafewstand-outmomentsforme.
FirstofallthejudgingdayfortheWE50wassimplyastounding;thequalityandquantityofnominationsforbothcurrentandformerapprenticeswerebreath-takingandmadechoosingthefinal50incrediblydifficult!
PresentingtheawardsattheAfternoonTeawasarealprivilegeanditwassogreattoseethedetailandrecognitionoftheirachievementsinTheGuardiansupplement.
AroundouractualcentenarydayandINWEDwereceivedsomeamazingcoveragewithagreatpieceinTheTelegraph;andslotsonBBCBreakfastandSkyNewstoboot!
However,ImustconfessthatofthefranticactivitiesofthelastfewmonthsmyfavouritehastobethesublimecelebrationlunchthatGrazynaWhapshottkindlyorganisedatthePolishClubinLondononthedayofourcentenary(seepage6).
ThevenuewasbeautifulanditwassonostalgicandinspiringtorememberandheartributestothemanyamazingwomenwhocreatedWESorhavebeeninstrumentalintheSocietyovertheyears.

DawnChildsMAMDABEngCEngFICEFIMechEFRAeSFWESthewomanengineer-autumn20193CentenaryToday,womenstillonlymakeupabout12percentoftheprofessionalengineeringworkforceintheUK,afactthattheWomen'sEngineeringSocietywantstochange.
AspartoftheWESCentenaryTrail(aNationalLotteryHeritagefundedproject)duringitscentenaryyear,WEShaschosentocelebratethelivesofmanyofitspast,distinguishedmembersandothernotablewomenengineersintheUKandbeyond.
Byrediscoveringandpromotingtheachievementsofsomeofourpreviousmembersthroughoutouronehundredyearhistory,WESisaimingtoincreasepublicawarenessofwomen'srolesinthehistoryofengineering,aswellasprovidingrolemodelsforfuturegenerationsofwomenengineersandwiderSTEMcareers.
On23June2019,exactlyonehundredyearsafterWES'foundation,theinteractiveCentenaryTrailMapwaslaunchedatwww.

Shebecamearenownedspecialistinstructuralanalysis,workingonthedesignoftheR101airshipandmanyaeroplanes,aswellasbecominganexpertinstreamlining.
ShewasanactivememberofWESandgaveatalktothesocietyinwhichshedescribedherworkandlifeasan"adventureinaeronauticaldesign".
Sadly,shediedprematurelyattheageof50butwaswarmlyrememberedbycolleaguesasameticulousengineerwhowouldhaveachievedevenmorehadshelivedlonger.

AcaptiveaudienceTheUK'smajorsubcontractingshowSubcon(4-6June2019)andTheEngineeringExporecognisedtheWESCentenarybydedicatingtheconferencesessionsinTheEngineerConferenceonthemorningof6JunetotheneedtoimproveUKengineering'sgenderbalance.

Themeanaveragesalaryforprofessionallyregisteredrespondentsis55,968,comparedto45,809amongstthosewhoarenotprofessionallyregistered.
Thissalarydifferencecanbeseenacrossallsectorsofengineeringandateverycareerlevelbeyondgraduatetrainee/apprentice,wheresalariesappearconsistent.
Inachangefrom2018,thebiggestsalarydifferencewasforengineersworkinginthetelecommsandutilitiesandelectronicssectors,whereprofessionalregistrationsawanaveragedifferenceofalmost18,000.
Thedifferencewasalsopronouncedintheenergy/renewableandnuclearsectors,witha13,000differencebetweenregisteredandnon-registeredrespondents.
