Peerscompriseanimportantcomponentofadolescents'socialcontexts.
Thus,theroleofpeersinadolescents'PIUisnoteworthy.
Deviantpeeraffiliationisacorecharacteristicofnegativesocialconnectednesswithpeers.
Thereisconsiderableevidenceindicatingthatdeviantpeeraffiliationisapowerfulpredicatorofadolescents'problembehaviors(e.

,aggression,substanceuse,anddelinquency)andemotionaldisturbances(e.

,depression,anxiety).
However,limitednumberofstudiesfocusedontheroleofdeviantpeeraffiliationinadolescents'PIU.
Moreimportantly,thereciprocalrelationbetweendeviantpeeraffiliationandadolescents'PIUhasnotbeendetermined.
Thisstudyusedatwo-wavecross-laggedpanelanalysistoexplorethelikelyreciprocalassociationbetweendeviantpeeraffiliationandadolescents'PIU.
Inaddition,wealsoexaminedwhethertheabovebidirectionalrelationwoulddifferbysex.
Participantswere886adolescents(44%boys;Mage=15.
55)whoprovidedself-reportdataondeviantpeeraffiliationandproblematicInternetUseaswellasdemographicvariablesatthebeginningandtheendofaschoolyear.
Weusedthequestionnairedevelopedbyourstudyteamtoassessdeviantpeeraffiliation.
Inaddition,adolescents'PIUwasmeasuredbythediagnosticquestionnaireforscreeningofInternetdependencydevelopedbyYoungandmodifiedbyLiandhiscolleaguesforuseinChinesepopulations.
Allthemeasureshadgoodreliabilityandvalidity.
WefirstcalculateddescriptivestatisticsforourvariablesofinterestandbivariateassociationamongthesevariablesinSPSS19.

ItshowsthebidirectionalassociationbetweendeviantpeeraffiliationandPIU:higherlevelofdeviantpeeraffiliationpredictsmorePIUovertime,andviceversa.
Genderdifferencesarefoundintheabovebidirectionalassociationbymultiplegroupanalyses.
Thus,moreattentionshouldbepaidtomalestudents.
ThesefindingscontributetounderstandingtheantecedentsandoutcomesofadolescentPIUandhaveimportantimplicationsforinterventionsaimedatreducingtheprevalenceofadolescents'PIU.
WerecommendthatdeviantpeercontextwhichfacilitatesPIUshouldbesupervised.
Inaddition,variousprograms(e.
