InFigure1,currentisplottedversustimedepictingthestartupprofileforabrushedDCmotor.
Inthiscase,currentislimitedtoapproximately2amperesbeforethemotorreachesasteadystateconditionoflessthan1ampere.
Withoutcurrentregulation,thissamemotorpeakstoover14amperes.
Thisnotonlyrequiresanover-designedpowersupplytosupportthistransient,butthemotordriveralsoneedstoberatedtoreliablyhandlethepeakcurrents.

Bypassingthisproportionalcurrentthroughasmallresistor,avoltageproportionaltocurrentcanbemonitoredwithanexternalmicrocontrollertodeterminechangesinloadconditionsandactaccordingly.
Thisinternalcurrentmonitoringfeatureeliminatestheneedforanexternalpowerresistorandconditioningcircuitslikeanoperationalamplifier.
Finally,wegettosteppermotorsthatfurtherbenefitfromthePCBsizeandBOMadvantagesofintegratedcurrentsensingsincesteppermotorshavetraditionallyrequiredtwoexternalsenseresistorstofeedbackthecurrenttothedriver.

Insummary,integratedcurrentsensinginTI'slatestfamilyofmotordriversremovescostlypowerresistorsfromtheBOM,reducesboardsize,componentcount,andsimplifiesPCBrouting.
