1AssignmentofDeviceNamesLinuxassignsdevicenamestoavarietyofdevices,suchastheharddiskdrive,intheorderthatitrecognizesthemduringitsstartupsequence.
Ifthesystemisrestartedafteradevicesuchasaharddiskdriveorcontrollerfails,theassigneddevicenamesmaybechangedbecausethesystemcannotrecognizeadevicethathasfailed.
Example:WhenharddiskdrivesareconnectedtoSCSIID1,2,and3,devicenames/dev/sda,/dev/sdb,and/dev/sdcareassignedrespectivelytothediskdrives.
If/dev/sdbfailsunderthiscondition,thedevicepreviouslyassigned/dev/sdc/ismovedupbyoneandrecognizedas/dev/sdbafterthesystemisrestarted.
Ifanassigneddeviceisunexpectedlychanged,itmaypreventthesystemfromstartingor,intheworstcase,maydamageyourdata.
Ifadevicefaultisdetected,therefore,Fujitsurecommendsstartingthesysteminrescuemodeandcheckingforhardwarefaultsbeforerestartingthesystem(*1).
Repairthehardwarefault,restorethesystembymeanssuchasthebackuptape,andthenrestartthesystem.
