Throughouttheeightiesandnineties—especiallyatuniversitywheremulticulturalismanddiversityweretheorderoftheday—Icontinuallyheardandbelievedthatdivisionsbasedoncolordidnotmatter.

Istudiedarthistory,whichmeantclassafterclassofwhitearthistory,punctuatedbyspecialexoticclassessuchasJapanesearthistory.

ThoughIhadlivedinJapan,Indonesia,Chile,andTaiwan,andwasusedtopossessingoneofthefewwhitefacesaround,thiswasnewterritory.
Neverbeforehadmyskincolorbeenintheminority,inacountrywherethemajorityofpeoplelooklikeme.
Noonewasintriguedbymyexoticness,orpleasedaboutyetanotherforeigner'sdesireto"help.

Suchabroadandambiguousdefinitionallowstheentranceofpeople,whohavehistoricallynotbeenwhite,intotheflockofwhiteness.
