Thesechallengesincludeblooddamage(hemolysisandthrombosis),changingcontactconditionsduringeachheartbeat,high-cyclefa-tigue-to-fracture,andtheneedtoaccommodatethehighlyvariablegeometric,material,andhemodynamicenvironmentencounteredacrossthetargetpopulation.
Thecardiovascularde-viceindustryincreasinglyreliesoncomputermodelingasacontrolledandrepeatablemethod-ologyforassessingthesedevicedesign-relatedfactors.
Additionally,cliniciansareevaluatingcomputermodelingasapre-interventionalplanningtoolthatcanconfirmtheneedfortreatmentandoptimizetreatmentoutcomes.
Thisspecialissue,therefore,seeksoriginalresearchthathighlightstheuseofcomputermodelsinallstagesofcardiovasculardevicedevelopmentandassessment.
Contributionsareex-pectedtoutilizeoneormoreofawiderangeofapproaches,includingcomputationalfluiddy-namics(CFD),finiteelementanalysis(FEA),high-andlow-frequencyelectromagnetics,re-duced-orderandlumpedparameterapproaches,multi-scaleanalysis,anatomicmodels,andstatisticalshapeanalysis(PCA).
Contributionsmusttietheworkdescribedtothedesignofamedicaldevice,eitherbyincorporatingasimulateddeviceasanexampleorbydescribinghowthecomputationaltoolwouldbeusedinthedesignofaspecificmedicaldevice.
Potentialtopicsinclude,butarenotlimitedto:xcardiovascularbiomechanicsinhealthanddisease,includingsofttissuemodelingxtheimpactofimageacquisitionand/orsegmentationonmodeluncertaintyxshapevariabilityofanatomicstructuresinthepopulationxphysiologicalresponse(s)toanintervention,bothlocally(e.
