Computersthatareusedforalotofgraphicwork(art,engineeringdrafting,largecontiguousdatasets),compilingofprograms(C,Basic,Java),orintensivenumbercrunching(extensiveExcelspreadsheetsordatabasereportingonlargedatabases)shouldprobablybesettothelargervalue,whereasthoseusedforlessintensiveactivitiescouldusethelowervalue.
Performingthisactionwillreducethefragmentationofthepagefileonthedisk,therebyslightlyspeedingupvirtual-memorypagingactivities.
Thisisnotasimportantwithsystemsusing512megabytesofRAMorhigher,duetothelowerrequirementoftheoperatingsystemtopagememoryouttothevirtualmemorypagefile.
However,itisstillrecommendedtocreateacontiguouspagefile.
Settingbothvaluesinthevirtualmemorytothesamenumberwillfreezethepagefiletoaspecificplaceontheharddisk.
Therefore,defragmentationisimportantpriortosettingthepagefiletoacustomsize.
ThisisespeciallyimportanttoanysystemrunningavideoNon-LinearEditing(NLE)system,recordingofsound(pagingtovirtualmemorydoesoccasionallycauseadropoutofeithervideodataorsoundonslowersystems),orlargedatabaseswherefragmentationcanslowdownsortingandsearchesconsiderably.
Incaseslikethese,usersshouldbeusingfastersystemswithmorememory,fasterdrives,andhighspeeddataportstoreducedrop-outsandincreasefidelity.
Also,itissuggestedtokeeptime-dependentsystemssuchasthesededicatedtotheirprimaryroleandconfigureaseparatecomputerforOfficeapplications.
Fornewcomputers,itisrecommendedtoperformadefragmentationofthedisk(s)priortoputtingthemintoservice,alongwithamanualsettingofthepagefilesize.
Thoughthiswilluseafairchunkofyourharddisk,itisworthitlateron.
DiskI/Oisamajorrestrictiontoprocessingspeedinmosthighdatavolume,timesensitiveprograms(suchasvideonon-lineareditingsystems).
Freezingthepagefileplacementonthediskminimizesharddiskreads,reducesfurtherfragmentationofthedisk,andprovidesforamorepredictable"currentfreespace"disksize.
Becausepagingfilesizecanvarywidelyduringsystemusagewhen"systemmanaged,"theharddiskbouncesbetweenlittletonoavailableharddiskspacewhentheharddiskisnearlyfull.
ThereareseveralKnowledgeBasearticlesonthissubjectdocumentingthestrangebehaviorapplicationscanexhibitwhenlowmemoryisencountered.
Whentheerrorisreducedtoaone-timeoccurrenceandtheharddiskisindeedfull,itiseasiertoidentifyandtroubleshoottheissue.

Itprovidesacalendarviewofthelastknownconfigurationchangesofthesystem(usuallytriggeredbytheinstallationofanapplicationtothesystem).

InordertosavetheinstalledconfigurationofWindowsXPandalltheapplicationsinstalledtoit,itisnecessarytokeepacopyoftheregistryandpertinentdatafilesthatmayhavebeendeletedfromthesystemduringtheinstallationofnewsoftware.
