Considerthis:Withinthepastyear,personallyidentifiableinformationhasbeenstoleninanumberofsignificantcyberdatabreaches,impactingindustrieslikehealthcare,government,finance,corporate,andretail.
Theuseofmalwarebyonlinecriminalscontinuesunabated,andoftheavailableintrusiondevices,the"bot"isparticularlypervasive,allowingattackerstotakecontrolremotelyofcompromisedcomputers.
Onceinplace,these"botnets"canbeusedindistributeddenial-of-serviceattacks,proxyandspamservices,additionalmalwaredistribution,andotherorganizedcriminalactivity.
Cybercriminalsperpetrateawidevarietyofcrimesonline,includingtheftofintellectualproperty,Internetfraud,identityfraud,andanynumberoffinancialfraudschemes.
SexualpredatorsusetheInternetandsocialmediatotargettheyoungestandmostvulnerablevictims.
Andmanycriminalsusetheso-called"darkweb"or"darkmarket"websitesthatofferarangeofillegalgoodsandservicesforsaleonanetworkdesignedtoconcealthetrueIPaddressesofthecomputersonit.
TheFBI—workinginconjunctionwithitsmanypartnersatthelocal,state,federal,andinternationallevels,aswellaswithindustry—takesitsownroleincybersecurityveryseriously.
Thatroleinvolvesoperationalefforts—includinginvestigatinganddisruptingcyber-relatednationalsecuritythreatsandcybercrimesandcollecting,analyzing,anddisseminatingcyberthreatintelligence.
Italsoinvolvesoutreacheffortstoindustry.

InNovember2014,theownerandoperatorofaresurrectedSilkRoad—SilkRoad2.
0—wasarrestedandcharged,andlawenforcementtookdownthatsiteaswell,alongwithdozensofotherso-called"darkmarket"websites.
TheinvestigationinvolvedthecooperativeeffortsoftheFBIandnumerouslocal,state,federal,andinternationalpartners.

0InApril2015,amulti-nationallawenforcementeffortwasresponsiblefortakingdownacybercriminalforumthatservedasaone-stop,high-volumeshoppingvenueforsomeoftheworld'smostprolificcybercriminals.
Darkodewasanundergroundpassword-protectedmeetingplaceforthoseinterestedinbuying,selling,andtradingmalware,botnets,stolenpersonallyidentifiableinformation,creditcardinformation,hackedservercredentials,andotherpiecesofdataandsoftware.
TheFBIwasabletoinfiltratetheforumatthehighestlevelsandcollectevidenceandintelligenceonDarkodemembers.
Duringthetakedown,charges,arrests,andsearchesinvolved70membersandassociatesaroundtheworld.
-MoreonDarkodeInApril2015,acoordinatedinternationallawenforcementandprivatesectorcybereffortresultedinthetakedownofabotnetknownasBeebone—a"downloader"thatallowedotherformsofmalwaretobeinstalledonvictims'computerswithouttheirknowledgeorconsent.
ThesecondaryinfectionsinstalledbyBeeboneincludedsoftwarethatstealsbankingloginsandpasswordsaswellasfraudulentanti-virussoftwareandransomware.
-MoreonBeebonethreatinvestigationsinlocalcommunitiesthroughinformationsharing,incidentresponse,andjointenforcementandintelligenceactions.
InfraGard—aninformation-sharingandanalysiseffortwithprivatesectorpartnerswhoown,operate,andholdkeypositionswithinsome85percentofthenation'scriticalinfrastructure—equipsitsmemberstoidentifyandmitigatevulnerabilities,developincidentresponseplans,andenactsecuritybestpractices.
TheInternetCrimeComplaintCenter(IC3)acceptsonlinesubmissionsforInternet-relatedcrimecomplaints,ofteninvolvingfraudulentclaimstoconsumers.
Thesecomplaintscannotonlyleadtoculpritsgettingcaught,butalsohelpidentifyregional,national,orinternationaltrendstoeducatethepublicaboutconstantlyevolvingcyberthreatsandscams.
TheFBI'sSafeOnlineSurfingwebsite,anonlineprogramthatpromotescybercitizenshipbyeducatingyoungstudentsintheessentialsofonlinesecurityinanefforttohelpprotectthemfromchildpredators,cyberbullies,malware,amultitudeofschemes,andotherdangersontheInternet.
TheBureauwillcontinuetoworkjointlywithournationalsecurityandlawenforcementpartnerstoaddressthreatstothenation'scybersecurityfromnation-states,terroristorganizations,transnationalcriminalenterprises,andchildpredators.
Butgovernmentcan'tdoitalone—assistanceandvigilancefromthepublicisvital.
